Both “Kolchak” and “The Twilight Zone” would be pre-cursors.

Yes, Kolchak and “The Invaders” starring Roy Thinnis reminded me of the X-Files.

Don’t forget War of the Worlds (1988-1990)

I rewatched the original Kolchak series recently and then the remake TV series called “The Night Stalker” (2005) on youtube. The remake isn't as quirky and fun as the original. It also blends more of an “X-Files” mood to it with the skeptical woman reporter to Kolchak (son of the original iirc?). It was okay - I wish it had lasted longer than one season.

Kolchak was an inspiration for the X Files, they even cast Darren McGavin in an episode

“Both “Kolchak” and “The Twilight Zone” would be pre-cursors.“

If those shows had had the digital effects capability and relative budget of X Files, X Files would have seemed a direct ripoff.
