This Person Documented Their Unplugged Appliances Before Taking a Trip and It's Kind of Genius

This person on TikTok posted a video documenting their unplugged appliances before taking a trip and honestly, it's kind of ingenious.

Among all the intrusive thoughts I deal with on a regular basis, one of them involves trying to remember whether or not I did the most important things I should do before leaving the house. Namely, I ask myself if I locked the door, turned the stove off, or performed any other security tasks before stepping out. And even if I check all of those things off and officially leave, alarms will start going off in asking me if I really did do everything I should have before I left.

If I think even for a second that maybe I imagined doing all those things and didn't actually do them, it'll stick in the back of my mind and bother me for the entire trip until I return home. For all intents and purposes, it's a pretty irrational fear, but something I deal with on a daily basis.

To that end, this person on TikTok has an interesting solution. They posted a video documenting all of their unplugged appliances before taking a trip. It may look obsessive, but it's honestly clever!

Smartphone technology is changing society. Growing up having to develop film made us choosy about what we photographed, now it is easy, but sometimes difficult for us seniors to overcome our mindsets.

The power of smartphones is awesome, using it to document travel prep is "Smart". I take pictures of my baggage before travelling, this came in handy several times dues to lost or delayed luggage.

I wouldn’t post anything telling the world that I was away from home, but maybe that’s just me. As for turning things off, etc., I used to use a written checklist before traveling.

Film yourself locking the front door.

It’ll save you from the inevitable “honey did you lock the front door?” and ensuing debate about driving back 20 minutes to check.

NEVER post online ANY travel plans or pics on vacay etc. Bad Guys can look at your home pics, look at the encoded geolocation data, and rob you blind.

I thought they took the video for their own peace of mind? Not to share.

Too much work to video it. Me, I just do a walkthrough before leaving.

Also do that with campsites when hiking the mountains to make sure I’m not leaving a tent peg or something behind.

Well, the first sentence says that the person posted the video.

Before I leave, I take pictures with my camera.

Did I lock the storage unit? Snap!

Did I turn off the stove? Snap!

Did I bring Fido back into the house? Snap!

Smartphones are great. I take pictures of things I disassemble as I do it, so I can reassemble them when done repairing.

Unless... you’re in a particular, Charles Bronsony kinda mood... and aren’t really planning on leaving home. Could get interesting.

Why not just turn off the breakers?

I unplug to help reduce the chance of fire.

Reading thru the comments I do like the “take a picture of yourself locking the door” suggestion.

I physically secure the garage door and shut off the opener as well.

I did that when I was getting my father’s house ready to sell. I lived three hundred miles away and it took me about a month’s worth of visits over a year’s time to get everything done, and the video gave me some peace of mind. I didn’t post it, though, and wouldn’t.

I turn off the hot water heater and the water source going into the house.

“I post the vacation pics after I return home.”

That’s what most folks do. It might also prompt the organized crime clubs to pass over your house for at least another year or so. And yeah, there are such clubs out there. They just call the club a gang, instead.

I get 15 miles out of town and wonder if I turned the coffee pot off.

Thanks!
