Home wreckers? All the appliances the Biden administration plans to regulate more aggressively

In December, Energy Secretary Granholm announced that the administration had taken 110 actions on energy efficiency standards in 2022 alone...and are moving forward with rules impacting dozens more appliances.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Joe Biden administration continues to use executive authority to regulate popular household appliances at an unprecedented level, with claims that their changes will save consumers money and help slow climate change and its alleged effects on the environment.
Though the latest set of restrictions the administration is mandating is for gas powered furnaces, that is only the latest and far from the last.
“According to the current federal Unified Agenda, a government-wide, semiannual list that highlights regulations agencies plan to propose or finalize within the next 12 months, the Biden administration is additionally moving forward with rules impacting dozens more appliances,” according to Fox News.
The federal Unified Agenda is a complex chart that lists the plans and proposals in rather obscure terms. The Unified Agenda for just Department of Energy changes and proposals is very revealing in itself.
“Over the last several months, the Department of Energy (DOE) has unveiled standards to make various appliances…more efficient, and experts have said this would worsen product quality and lead to higher prices,” according to Fox Digital.
"It's just spreading to more and more appliances. It seems that almost everything that plugs in or fires up around the house is either subject to a pending regulation or soon will be," Ben Lieberman, a senior fellow at the Competitive Enterprise Institute, told Fox News Digital in an interview.
"Consumers aren't going to like any of it. These rules are almost always bad for consumers for the simple reason that they restrict consumer choice.
"Anybody who wants to choose the more eco-friendly versions of appliances is always free to do so. But these rules force that choice on everyone, whether it makes sense for them or not," Lieberman added. "Almost all of these appliance standards raise the upfront costs. It's not clear that you'll ever earn that back in the form of energy or water savings."
In December, Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm announced that the administration had taken 110 actions on energy efficiency standards in 2022 alone. She claimed that the regulations strengthened U.S. leadership in "the race towards a clean energy future."
Here is a partial list of both recent and soon to be regulated appliances:
Gas stoves
Ovens
Clothes washers
Refrigerators
Refrigerator freezers
Freezers
Air conditioners
Dishwashers
Pool pumps
Battery chargers
Ceiling fans
Dehumidifiers
Microwave ovens
Portable electric spas
Air compressors
Not quite "1984". More like "Brazil" (the movie, not the country).
I think this is a great idea by the Biden administration. Let’s start with Manhattan, LA, Frisco, Chicago and Philly and see how it works out. Once it is proven sustainable, cost effective and reliable, feel free to do this to the rest of the country.
Don't forget water heaters - you will not be allowed one of those, only government officials.
What law allows the Executive Branch to impose such regulations and restrictions on consumer devices? If such a law exists, every GOP candidate in Congressional races and in the presidential primaries should be committing to the repeal of this law. If the law does not exist, the Energy Department should be taken to court.
More expensive, less durable, and don’t work as well.
And one day in 200 years ago from now, when man has devolved back to days before the industrial revolution, some young guy will find an old car & a manual and realize what a great mode of transportation it can be! and life will start again.
the government is like a cancer that can and will destroy and eat away everything until it’s dead.
My hybrid water heater (built-in heat pump) works great for me, and even helps cool the house. But that's just for me in a warm climate where free cold air is great.
It should be a free market decision. I have family members who live in cold climates that have little to benefit from a water heater like mine. Or even a family living in my area might hate the water heater if they have a large family (it takes longer to reheat the tank than a standard gas or electric water heater). Only in a free market can everybody choose what's best for him.
It is leading to a “fiat rule” government.
The Constitution is being ignored.
But “It’s for your safety.”
Completing the road to third world status. However, one thing none of the government wahoos is taking into account is the ingenuity of Americans.
“with claims that their changes will save consumers money”
Oh, please! Government departments ALWAYS promises us cost savings with their newest regulations, but these savings never, ever materialize. Millions upon millions of people are STILL waiting on their $2500 in annual savings on their health care insurance they were promised thanks to Obamacare.
Definitely more expensive. However, back in the 2000’s I replaced a old Hotpoint side by side fridge/freezer with a new French door freezer. My electric bill went down $20/month.
At the same house we had an inground pool. We replaced the pool pump(which runs 7-8 hours/day). Again, the electric bill dropped $25/month.
On the other hand. I bought a new washing machine when we bought this house 12 years ago. The local dealer convinced me to buy a Fischer Paykel top loader because it would save me dryer time and put LESS water into the 40 year old leach field. The board died after five years. We went back to the same local store and replaced it with the exact same model. The board died again after six years. We replace that with a
Speed Queen. The board on that one just got replaced for FREE because it has a 5 year warranty. So, some of the ENERGY STAR appliances make sense to replace. Supposedly Speed Queen and Maytag make the best washing machines on the market. Speed Queen still makes a model with the dial analog controls. NO COMPUTER BOARD. If this one dies in a few years, that is what I will buy.
Does the SpeedQueen actually use sufficient water to wash clothes properly? Our GE does not. We have to add a large bucket of water to every load or else the top of the clothes pile in the washer will remain dry.
It seems to. I have never had an issue with not enough water in the drum. The washer was the board died. The company/dealer we bought it from replaced it. The other issue is that the switch indicating the lid is closed has needed to be replaced twice now. Another stupid safety feature. Probably to keep someone from sticking their hand in the drum when it is on the spin cycle.
I also have a Speed Queen dryer. It has the dial on the right just like all the old dryers from the 1970s. Buttons to push in to turn it on. Another dial to change from Permanent Press to Regular cycles. So, no touch screen computer board.
It all started with limiting flush toilets to 2 1/2 gallons. That was the nose under the tent.
The problem is diminishing returns. If you go from a car that gets 10 mpg to 20 mpg it cuts the gas you use driving 1,000 miles from 100 gallons to 50 gallons. If you go to 40 mpg you will only save 25 gallons. The compromises you have to make in car design to go from 20 to 40 mpg are huge.
