The opposite happened to me once, gas to diesel.
Had a rental tractor (semi) once and when I got to my initial destination, about 20-30 miles, and the motor started to "runaway". Got the rental company to send a mechanic to check it. Turned out whoever fueled it on it's last return filled one saddle tank with diesel and the other with gas. I drove it far enough for the gas to cross feed enough to the engine. We had to tow it to a place to drain the gas, about 200 gallons, replace all the fuel filters to it get back on the road again.

The way it happened to me was the bulk truck put diesel into the unleaded underground storage tank. The bulk truck was there when I was doing my fueling. The station caught the error just as I was leaving & had a tow truck take my vehicle to a mechanic for draining the contaminated fuel. My vehicle was just one of many that had to be repaired on the bulk truck company dime.
