On the liner notes for the classic album Judy Garland At Carnegie Hall it says the fans in the audience who stormed the stage included Rock Hudson.
Funny his image was changed decades later. Aunt Bee on Andy Griffith had a framed picture of him on her dresser.
The album was one of 50 recordings chosen by the Library of Congress to be added to the National Recording Registry.
When I was very young and naive in my early 20s I kind of liked a guy who was homosexual. Looking back I have no idea how in the world I felt this way other than a motherly protective instinct. I was dating an extremely handsome, 6’4 guy who girls were all constantly after but left me cold, he was so conceited. Always looking in the mirror.
But this homosexual guy was so messed up, so vulnerable I guess I feel protective of him, felt sorry for him. His parents both died very shortly before I met him and in the same month. He was only about 22. Drank themselves to death.
He was always wanting to do this act he constantly practiced asking me to watch. Rehearsing though he never went for any auditions or anything. He wanted to perform as a female impersonator. He only did one impersonation. Judy Garland. Badly. Now I can never see Judy Garland without that memory. Kinda wish I could forget it.
I have seen photos of her from late 30’s with Mickey Rooney then by 1954 in a tv show she looked awful from the effects of alcohol and drugs.
Maybe take or leave her as she was, not based on what homosexuals thought about her 50 years ago.

I was born in the late ‘80’s. I know who she was. I’m still very fond of her. It’s also common for kiddie stars of all generations to wind up on drugs. Being raised in an environment being told you’re not good enough or thin enough or pretty enough screws with a girl’s and/or young woman’s head, and I promise that she was introduced to drugs by her employers as a means of weight loss, mood stabilizer or energy booster depending on what she took.
It’s also not her fault that she wound up popular with the drag crowd - long after she was gone, too. She can’t be faulted for that.
That doesn’t take away from her talent or that she was lovely. I actually have a more difficult time watching let alone admiring modern stars because their personal lives and political leanings are so public.
Judy Garland (born Frances Gumm) was not related to Merrick Garland (whose family name was originally Garfinkle or Garfinkel).
