“The anti-tank fighters of the 68th Jaeger Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces caught the BMP-3 of the too insolent invaders, who for several weeks fired at the positions of Ukrainian fighters and avoided retribution.”

The Russian military, the second largest military in the world, may not be what it looks like. Lies and systematic corruptions may in fact have dragged Russia into this war with Ukraine, which has been heavily backed up by the US and NATO. We will present the evidence, you make your own decision, because the Russian Army, is not what you think.

Designed to support the U.S. Army Captains Career Course, “Understanding Combined Arms Warfare” defines and outlines the important aspects of modern combined arms operations. This is not a complete history of combined arms warfare. It is intended to highlight the most important aspects of the subject.

The beginning of the documentary establishes a common understanding of combined arms warfare by discussing doctrinal and equipment developments in World War I. The second part compares the development of French and German Army mechanization during the interwar period and describes how each country fared during the Battle of France in 1940. The film concludes by showing how the United States applied combined arms operations in the European Theater in World War II.

[ Lethal Street | We Killed Everyone Who Crossed | Tight Control | Ukrainians Prevent a Major Breakthrough ]

••Day 417: April 16

Today there is a lot of news from the East.

Here, in Bakhmut, Russian forces attempted to complement their recent offensive to the north of Bakhmut by developing attacks to the south. However, Ukrainians understood that this was the next logical step and assigned their best sniper, artillery, and drone crews to make sure that Russians do not cross the main street, so when Russians started launching their attacks, they lost one assault unit after another within minutes.

The freshest reports suggest that Ukrainians established permanent surveillance of Russian positions along Korsunskogo street and are eliminating all Russian reconnaissance groups already on the approach. The footage released by the Ukrainian 93rd Mechanized Brigade shows how drone operators coordinate with an artillery crew and destroy a Russian assault unit the moment it tries to cross Korsunskogo Street.

Such continuous actions successfully prevented Russians from developing offensive actions from a secondary axis. What complicates the situation for Russians even more is that this area basically has nothing to hide behind. Since the clashes here have been taking place for months, and all the houses in the region are quite small, everything was gradually leveled with the ground, making attacks from this direction as dangerous as attacking through the fields.

When it comes to the central part of the region, Ukrainians are still holding positing on the train station. The soldiers that are defending it said that Russians are increasing the pressure after they established control over the grain elevators. Recent geolocated footage confirms that Russians indeed crossed the rails and are operating in the vicinity of the grain elevators.

In the northern part of the region, the fighting continues. One of the fighters said that intense artillery fire brought the Russians to senses and forced them to stop pushing further. Today Ukrainians tried to regain the initiative and counterattacked Russians along the whole line.

Russians reportedly started retreating, although they did put up an intense fight, and overall resistance was immense. Combat footage released by the Ukrainian side shows that Ukrainians are operating in small assault units in order to test Russian defense capabilities from all sides. Whenever a group advances, it tries to leverage the gains immediately to help other units breach their strong points.

Today a commander of the Ukrainians 1st Border Detachment, which is responsible for the southern line, stated that they meet Wagner forces quite rarely and that almost all attacks are already conducted by regular Russian forces. This statement confirms my analysis based on the footage of fights and prisoners of war. Today, Ukrainians reportedly took captive several more dozens of soldiers and showed weapons taken as trophies. This is less than yesterday, although still much more than usual.

A lot of those captives were taken near the Khromove road. A fighter from the Aidar Battalion reported that yesterday they forced a group of Russians to surrender in the aftermath of an unsuccessful Russian assault. Fighters from the Da Vinci Wolfs Battalion showed a video of how they got encircled, held an all-round defense, and still repelled the massive Russian attack.

In order to not allow Russian to move freely in the region and prepare for their assaults, Ukrainians are also conducting assaults. Today the Da Vinci Wolves Battalion showed the aftermath of a successful assault on Russian positions. Prior to this assault, their drone operators, in coordination with artillery crews, increasingly targeted Russians in the trenches. As a result, they managed to undermine a Russian strong point and reduce control over the region after a successful assault.

Overall, Ukrainians are keeping Russians away from the main supply roads to Bakhmut and are conducting counterattacks to push them even further whenever possible.

Inside Bakhmut, Ukrainians managed to prevent a similar development of offensive actions in the south by establishing tight control over the region and preventing Russians from concentrating their forces by immediately targeting all units that got out of cover. It looks like the situation stabilized, and as stated by a soldier from the 24th Assault Battalion, if Ukrainians break Russian momentum in the north, then Bakhmut will continue to hold.

Russians are moving slower and slower, which means they are meeting very heavy UA resistance.

Avdiivka:
UA made a successful counterattack in this area, but no further info. More Russians captured here.

==
Marinka:
More Russians captured. Town was long ago demolished, but the Russians are still unable to take the town.

==
Belgorod:
Drone attack reported. Unsuccessful attack on a power plant.

==
POW exchange: 130 UA troops returned. Chechen troops returned home to hear from Kaderov they must go back and fight because they allowed themselves to be captured.

==
UA Defense Minister, Reznikov announces the number of UA dead is less than 50,000 troops; the number of dead is less than the number of people killed in the recent earthquake in Turkey (50,000) - no specific number given.

He said the main goal of the leaked UA documents was to undermine the trust between allies. Russia is waiting for a parade of ‘sovereignties’ - Tatarstan, Bashkiria, Chechnya, Dagestan, the eastern region will cease to be Russian.

Denys says the real number of Ukrainian troop losses is 1/3rd the Russian number. Denys also says he agrees with the breakup of the Russian Federation because it is moving towards that end, step by step. However, he thinks that Reznikov is corrupt and should have been replaced - a process which was begun, but abruptly halted.

Denys says the troops need and keep requesting thermal cameras - among many, many other relatively cheap items, but they can only get them through volunteers. Without those volunteers and the Western allies, this war would have ended a long time ago in a Russian victory.

Many in the Ukrainian Military Command still have the old Soviet mind set: oppose new things, troops are expendable, etc. also their UA is held back to some degree. The state of the UA is not because of the government, but because of help from our allies. This is information Denys got speaking with his Ukrainian friends. They all hope for a change in the government after the war because what some politicians are doing is compete madness.

In Germany, the German Foreign Minster, Burbock, spent >137,000 Euros of the budget on her personal makeup artist, another 178,000 Euros on her photographers. [How any amout of makeup helps is a mystery.]

==
Scenes of thousands of marching soldiers on green grass indicates it is spring and is recent - Denys identifies that the video is taken near or at an airfield from checkered markers and a fence. They are walking on an unpaved runway during some part of training.

==
Institute of War Research: UA offensive will be very difficult because of all of the fortifications Russians has built. Russia has about 140,000 troops in Ukraine, so any counter offensive would need 420,000 troops. But no one knows how many UA troops are available. The UA still does not have air superiority over Russia. Rather, Russia has air superiority over areas they control.

==
Russia and its troops still have no idea what their goal is in Ukraine, while the UA troops are fighting for their lives, families, homes, and freedom from oppression. Russian troops, for the most part, are not motivated while UA troops are mostly very motivated.

==
UA has begun to receive 120mm HE mortar mines, along with 82mm & 152mm mines made in Ukraine. Manufacture only begun in January. Reznikov, the UA, and the government was not prepared for a full scale war.

==
There has been no investigation on how the Russian took the southern regions, other than Mariupol with out a shot. [Head of the Presidential Administration and suspected KGB/FSB operative, Andrei Yermak ordered the mines separating Crimea removed 2 weeks before the Russians attacked from their Marine base in Crimea.]

Denys says Zelenski is doing a good job of getting allies and weapons, but the Parliament and other government officials need to be gotten rid of soon. Last year the Parliament voted to cut soldiers’ salaries by 1000%, and increase their own salary at the same time, as they work so hard.

Now, under pressure from the people and the soldiers they were forced to bring soldiers salaries back. However, the Parliament is trying to introduce a law forbidding military people from going into politics.

==
In Poland and Hungry everything is way more expensive than in Ukraine, and that’s why the EU bought Ukrainian grain setting off Polish and Hungarian farmers in protest because their products, at higher prices, were not selling.

==
Pygozhyn says in his recent speech that Russia needs to lose the war in order to crush the Russian Deep State and then arise again, like Germany after WWI. Putin will remain in power, but without the Deep State. The only way Putin can keep his power is to lose it controllably by accusing the Russian elite and replacing them with Pygozhyn and his friends. This constitutes an ultimatum from Pygozhyn to Putin.

In all of this speech, Pygozhyn has no logic. Because of that, he may write his memoirs from prison.

Contrary to the many ‘Russian are stupid’ stereotypes that have developed throughout the war, they have demonstrated an ability in some areas to learn and adapt. This isn’t a statement of admiration. 1/25
12:27 AM · Apr 17, 2023

2/ It is however necessary to understand Russian #adaptation. In understanding it, we can ensure Ukrainian forces understand tactical and operational risks, and that they are best prepared for the offensives ahead.

3/ Several areas of Russian adaptation during this war bear closer examination stand out: strategic adaptation; operational adaptation; and tactical adaptation. In this thread I will explore some areas of tactical adaptation.

4/ Tactical adaptation is those actions that underpin learning and improvement on the battlefield, as well as the dissemination of those lessons to other battlefield elements as well as the training institutions that prepare reinforcements and new units.

5/ One area of adaptation has been how the Russians have conducted close combat. Early in the war, the Russians sought to conduct sweeping manoeuvres that coordinated airborne and airdrop operations with ground offensive operations.

6/ Unfortunately for the Russians, air-land integration as well as ground combined arms tactics were poorly conducted. This permitted the Ukrainians to attack Russian logistics and rear areas and unhinge of the Russian invading force.

7/ The disastrous crossing of the Severskii River was another exemplar of poor Russian tactical integration in their combat operations. It was indicative of an army that was still coming to grips with modern targeting, and complex tactical integration when crossing obstacles.

8/ However, after this, the Russians appeared to learn. Their conduct of the withdrawal from Kherson in October and November 2022 shows that they had adapted.

9/ Other more recent tactical adaptations bear mentioning. The first that emerged was the large-scale deployment of Wagner Group mercenaries in 2022, particularly in the Bakhmut area of eastern Ukraine.

10/ Their adaptation was a return to human wave attacks that have featured in conflicts such as the Iran-Iraq war. This was not just the simple application of human wave tactics, however.

11/ It is a more sophisticated adaptation to tactics where the initial human waves are just the first echelon of several, each successive echelon featuring more experienced and capable troops.

12/ Each successive wave would claw out small gains and eventually better trained and more experience Wagner Troops would exploit any gains that these human wave attacks achieved.

13/ Another recent tactical adaptation by Russian forces has included the formation of Shock Troops and the use of infiltration tactics to bypass Ukrainian strongpoints.

14/ Perhaps the best exploration of this topic has been provided in several posts by the
@Tatarigami_UA
twitter feed. I recommend following if you don’t already.

15/ The Russians have also evolved their conduct of air support to ground forces. In order to avoid the deadly Ukrainian air and missile defence network, the Russians have adapted their aerial tactics to employ longer range weapons.

16/ In March, it was revealed that the Russians have been using in combat for the first time their 1.5 ton UPAB-1500B glide bombs. Not only do these increase the survivability of the launch aircraft, but they are also very difficult to intercept.

17/ Concurrently, Russian forces have been quite busy adapting their defensive tactics and developing successive defensive zones in the east and the south. Back in November 2022, I examined the utility of tactical and operational obstacle belts and zones.

Mick Ryan, AM@WarintheFuture
Nov 8, 2022
Again we see reports of more extensive obstacle belts being constructed by the Russians in occupied #Ukraine. This tells us a few things - a thread on the political and military utility of these obstacles. 1/19 twitter.com/DefenceHQ/stat…

18/ Since then, the Russians have further developed these eastern and southern defensive belts. The twitter feed maintained by Brady Africk (
@BradyAfr
) is an excellent resource in following Russian construction of these obstacle belts and zones.

19/ There are several other tactical adaptations which I will cover in a subsequent post. These include Russian logistic systems, vehicle protection systems, and the use of drones and loitering munitions.

20/ Thus far, the Russians have demonstrated the ability to learn and to adapt at the tactical level. While this has been uneven, and many of the ideas are hardly new, it is undeniable that some learning and evolution has taken place.

21/ It is a military capability that will be central to Russia’s ongoing ability to conduct operations in Ukraine, and one that should be studied for weaknesses that can be exploited by the Ukrainian armed forces.

22/ Notwithstanding the Russian ability to learn and adapt in this war, it is also clear that the Ukrainians have also been quick studies in modern war. Part of this Ukrainian capacity for learning must focus on developing a better understanding of Russian learning systems.

23/ In doing so, Russian learning can be impeded or corrupted, and their tactical adaptation made less effective and less systemic.

24/ I look forward to sharing more on this topic in the near future in the hope of assisting the Ukrainian armed forces to develop a capacity for counter-adaptation against Russian forces. End

140k seems low. 300k were mobilized. Maybe 50-80k of casualties from that group.

KIU • Russian Officers killed in Ukraine 🇨🇿🇺🇦 @KilledInUkraine

Based on publicly available data from Russia, the Ukrainian armed forces eliminated at least 2 055 Russian officers as of 13 April 2023. Confirmations are made via funeral notices, obituaries and news sites.

Lieutenant Colonel Поротиков Вячеслав (Porotikov Vyacheslav), who retired in 2016 and was mobilized in the fall of '22, was killed in Ukraine.

Airborne Senior Lieutenant Служенко Александр Николаевич (Sluzhenko Alexander Nikolaevich), 98th Guards Airborne Division, 215th separate reconnaissance battalion, was killed in Ukraine on 17 February ’23. Poorly photoshopped, as usual.

23 yo Airborne Lieutenant Овлыков Тимофей Церенович (Ovlykov Timofey Tserenovich) from Kalmykia, 76th Guards Air Assault Division Pskov, was killed in Ukraine on 1 April ’23. No joke. Graduated in 2022.

“FYI: this weekend I will resume updating the main Oryx blog lists of Russian and Ukrainian visually-documented losses.”

“As a result, a backlog will likely exist and when that happens I will likely prioritize the processing of Russian losses - so Ukrainian list updates are likely to be less frequent.”

“Very few secondary lists will be updated (I think air and naval lost lists and heavy equipment provided to Ukraine) - likely about once a month or when something significant can be added.”
