Russia Triples Contract Length for Prisoners Fighting in Ukraine War

Russian prisoners are now signing contracts with Russia’s defense ministry to fight in Ukraine for an extended period of time, indicating that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war might drag on for another year, according to Russian prisoners’ rights activist Olga Romanova.
Romanova, director of the prisoner rights group Russia Behind Bars, wrote on Telegram on Saturday that the defense ministry has been recruiting prisoners to fight in Ukraine since February. The recruits would sign contracts with the ministry to fight for six months, but this period has now been extended to 18 months, Romanova said citing reports from the Sverdlovsk and Yaroslavl regions in Russia.
“New about the recruitment of prisoners. Since February, this has been done mainly by the Ministry of Defense. They report from two regions, Sverdlovsk and Yaroslavl: they began to sign contracts with prisoners not for 6 months, as it was before, but for 18. That is, they expect to fight next year as well,” the activist wrote on Telegram.
“This is Russia’s forever war,” Francis Scarr, a BBC Monitoring journalist, wrote on Twitter on Saturday, who shared Romanova’s post.
Putin launched his “special military operation” on Ukraine last February, with confidence that his country would achieve a quick victory against his Eastern European neighbor. However, Ukraine responded with a stronger-than-expected defense effort, mainly bolstered by Western aid that has deterred Russian military goals and limited their advancements. Over a year has passed since the invasion, with combat still concentrated in the easternmost regions of Ukraine, with analysts saying Russia’s attempted winter offenses have largely failed.
Though the fight has extended throughout major Ukrainian cities, including Kyiv, Odessa, Kherson, and most recently in Bakhmut, the Russian military experienced a number of setbacks that included a lack of ammunition and proper leadership as well as a shortage in troops.
Still, the Russian military has been supported by the Kremlin-backed Wagner Group, a paramilitary unit founded by Yevgeny Prigozhin, an ally of Putin. Prigozhin announced last month that more than 5,000 former prisoners have been released since last summer, after fulfilling their contracts with the group, according to independent news site Meduza. Meanwhile, over 50,000 prisoners have been recruited by the Wagner Group during the winter of 2022, according to Russia Behind Bars.
In February, Prigozhin said that the Wagner Group is no longer recruiting Russian prisoners to fight in the war.
“The recruitment of prisoners by the Wagner private military company has completely stopped,” he told Live24 news outlet at the time. “We are fulfilling all our obligations to those who work for us now.”
A new wave of prisoner recruitments was also reported last month by Ukraine’s defense ministry, and backed by Russia Behind Bars. The ministry reported that “female convicts” were being brought on a train to fight in the Donetsk region.
“Against the background of large losses of personnel in the war, the enemy uses alternative sources of replenishment of manpower,” the ministry posted on Telegram early last month. “Last week, the movement of a train with first-class carriages for the transportation of prisoners was noted towards the Donetsk region. One of the cars contained female prisoners.”
The recruitment comes amid high rates of reported casualties among Russian troops. In March, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that more than 1,100 Russian soldiers had been killed in the city of Bakhmut in less than a week. That same month, Ukrainian military spokesperson Oleksandr Shtupun said that 1,090 Russian fighters died in one day in what some have said may have been the deadliest day for Russia since the war began.
Newsweek reached out by email to the Russian defense ministry for comment.

Children deported by the Russian Federation after returning to Ukraine reported being beaten and otherwise punished for refusing to sing the Russian anthem and mentioning that they were Ukrainian.
Darya Gerasymchuk, Advisor to the Presidential Commissioner for Children’s Rights and Child Rehabilitation, spoke about this on the air of the United News telethon, reports Censor.NЕТ with reference to Ukrinform.
“Children who return do not say anything good about what happened to them there. In general, it depends on their location, because some of them were even beaten... because they kept mentioning that they were Ukrainians, because they refused to sing the Russian anthem, because they refused to get up during the Russian anthem, because they refused to sing ‘Russia, forward’ every morning, and so on. They were beaten and punished for this: they were not allowed to go for walks, forced to write and rewrite some Russian texts, etc.” Gerasymchuk said.
She emphasized that total Russification of Ukrainian children is taking place in Russia. Young Ukrainians are being turned against their parents, convincing them that their parents have abandoned them and that they should not return to Ukraine, where no one is supposedly waiting for them. “And then, in this spirit, everything that the sick imagination and fantasy of Russians allows them to say to children,” the Presidential Adviser emphasized.
According to her, Ukrainian children abducted by Russians suffer great psychological trauma, often even physical trauma. She cited an example of a child undergoing surgery in Russia without sufficient anesthesia, crying and screaming that it was very painful, but she was told to be patient.
At the same time, the Ombudsman’s advisor emphasized that there is currently no single mechanism for returning children, and that a separately developed rescue operation is carried out for each deported child or mini-group.
Gerasymchuk noted that the Russian authorities are not involved in the return of children or the negotiation process, but rather constantly move young Ukrainians, do not allow them to inform their families, and do not allow representatives of international organizations and third countries to visit them.

Ukrainian defense forces destroyed a Russian Repeynik radar station.
The Operational Command North reported this on Facebook, Ukrinform reports.
“Intelligence officers of the 30th Prince Konstanty Ostrogski Mechanized Brigade detected the enemy’s Repeynik radar system and provided coordinates to the neighbors from the 45th separate artillery brigade. An accurate shot from the M777 - and the target was destroyed,” the report says.
The Repeynik (Russian for ‘turnip’ – ed.) radar system is a modern Russian radar system for detecting drones. It has been in service with the invaders since 2022. According to data as of January, the Russians produced only 11 such radar stations.
As reported by Ukrinform, from February 24, 2022 to April 9, 2023, the Defense Forces of Ukraine eliminated about 178, 150 Russian aggressors, including 470 soldiers over the past day alone.

Ukrainian anti-aircraft gunners destroyed over a hundred Russian missiles and drones over the course of five months of combat operations using the NASAMS anti-aircraft missile system provided by international partners.

The Air Force shared how the system works and the number of targets shot down.

As can be seen in the video, the destroyed Russian targets are marked with trident markers on the system. There is footage of the downing of a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile at the end of the video.
The Air Force notes the high efficiency of the above-mentioned systems and reminds that Ukraine needs more similar weapons to turn the tide of the war with the Russian Federation.

Ukrainian artillery units destroyed a field ammunition supply point on the islands, according to the Operational Command Pivden (South).

Details: In addition to the field point, the invaders’ observation post on the left bank of Ukraine was also destroyed.
The total confirmed losses of the Russians are 12 soldiers, 7 units of weapons and equipment, including 2 self-propelled artillery guns, 2 electronic warfare stations, an unmanned reconnaissance vehicle “Supercam” and 2 cars.
The real soldiers in the hoho military have pretty much all been killed off at this point. And anybody who’d send 200K teenagers and old people out to face the Russian army is demented.

I always check in here for my daily dose of Ukrainian propaganda and seldom am I disappointed.
If anyone believes Ukraine has trained and equipped five full army corps, holding them back from any action...and will suddenly unleash them to change the course of the war they are just plain delusional.
