4 ways the Ukraine war is coming home to everyday Russians
We Are The Mighty

https://www.wearethemighty.com/intel/ways-the-ukraine-war-is-coming-home-to-everyday-russians/

We all know how Ukrainians have been affected at home by the Russian invasion. Over the course of more than a year, many Ukrainians, especially those in the east of the country, have been forced to flee their homes. Some have taken up arms to defend their homeland. Other are taking in refugees. Many more are experiencing their loved ones’ extended time away from home as they deploy to the front lines.

Russia and average Russians, for the most part, don’t really feel the effect of the extended war, at least not from the points of view of Russian news channels and social media. But their chickens are coming home to roost. One of the trending hashtags on Twitter for the past week has been #RussiaIsCollapsing, detailing the stories major news media has seemed to miss.
Here are just a few of the biggest ways Russians are finally starting to feel the effects of their prolonged war on Ukraine.

1. Bombings at home

In the summer of 2022, a car bomb near Moscow killed the daughter of a high-level Russian oligarch, one so close to Vladimir Putin, that he was deemed a “spiritual advisor” to the Russian president. No one knows for sure if that bomb was meant for the man or his daughter, but anti-Russian bombers have struck again, this time in Saint Petersburg.

An explosion in a Saint Petersburg cafe killed the pro-war, pro-Russian military blogger Vladlen Tatarsky, who was attending an event hosted by the pro-war Telegram channel “Cyber Front Z.” Tatarsky, whose real name is Maxim Fomin, not only had his own Telegram (with around 500,000 followers), he was also the author of several books, and was a veteran of the Donbas front in Ukraine.

2. Soldiers are not being paid

Russian news outlet Vyorstka reports that as of March 2023, salaries of service members and conscripts from 52 regions of Russia were not paid neither money nor social benefits of service. Those who were paid received much smaller amounts. On the Russian social media network Vkontakte, families were found complaining about the shortfalls of Russian military pay.

The Russian ministry of Defense says the shortfalls are actually delays in pay due to transfers to different units. Some say they did receive more compensation later in the month, but others are posting their paystubs, which read 0.00. It’s a bad look when you can’t even pay the troops you’re using. No wonder there are so many reports of Russian soldiers refusing to follow orders.

3. Mysterious fires across Russia

Almost from the moment Russian troops crossed the borders into Ukraine, mysterious fires have been set all across Russia, from the Ukrainian border in the West, all the way to Amursk in Eastern Siberia. Many of these have been arson attacks on recruiting stations. Others have been strategically important areas, such as military bases and railroad tracks.

Ukraine has not acknowledged the fires at strategic locations were sabotage efforts, but other targets have included St. Petersburg warehouses and pipelines, as well as apartment buildings, art museums, and other civilian areas of Moscow. Even the Russian aircraft carrier Kutuzov suffered a mysterious fire.

4. Bug-Out Bags

Military personnel are familiar with this, but civilians may not be, especially in Russia. In the Russian capital, public service announcements have started to appear that instruct civilians on how to properly pack a “bug-out” bag, a piece of luggage containing things necessary for short-term survival.”

Ukraine’s coal miners dig deep to power a nation at war

DNIPROPETROVSK OBLAST, Ukraine (AP) — Deep underground in southeastern Ukraine, miners work around the clock extracting coal to power the country’s war effort and to provide civilians with light and heat.

Coal is central to meeting Ukraine’s energy needs following the Russia’s military’s 6-month campaign to destroy power stations and other infrastructure, the chief engineer of a mining company in Dnipropetrovsk province said.

Elevators carry the company’s workers underground to the depths of the mine. From there, they operate heavy machinery that digs out the coal and moves the precious resource above ground. It is hard work, the miners said, but essential to keep the country going.

“Today, the country’s energy independence is more than a priority,” said Oleksandr, the chief engineer, who, like all the coal miners interviewed, spoke on the condition of giving only his first name for security reasons.

Russia’s attacks on Ukraine’s nuclear, thermal and other power stations continue to disrupt electricity service as the war grinds on for a second year.

Negotiations to demilitarize the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, which the Kremlin’s forces captured last year at the start of the full-scale invasion, are at an impasse.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy opposes any proposal that would legitimize Russian control of the plant, which is Europe’s largest nuclear energy facility.

At full capacity, the plant can produce 6,000 megawatts of electricity. The Ukrainian operators of the plant shut down the last reactor in September, saying it was too risky to run while Russia bombarded nearby areas.

Shelling has damaged the plant numerous times, raising fears of a possible nuclear meltdown. Russian missiles have also threatened the power lines needed to operate vital cooling equipment at Zaporizhzhia and Ukraine’s other nuclear plants.

Before the war, the Ukrainian government planned to reduce the country’s reliance on coal-fired power stations, which contribute to global warming, and to increase nuclear energy and natural gas production. But when Russian attacks damaged thermal plants in the middle of winter, it was coal that helped keep Ukrainian homes warm, Oleksandr said.

The work of the coal miners cannot fully compensate for the loss of energy from nuclear power plants, but every megawatt they had a role in generating reduced gaps.

“We come and work with optimism, trying not to think about what is going on outside the mine,” a miner named Serhii said. “We work with a smile and forget about it. And when we leave, then another life begins (for us), of survival and everything else.”

We all know how Ukrainians have been affected at home by the Russian invasion.

One nice outcome of the Russian artillery attack on Avdiivka is that the shelling of Donetsk City has finally stopped, after eight years.

Pray for peace (not through any kind of peace deal, but rather bloody and destructive violence).

08 Apr: FOOTAGE: Ukrainians HIT RUSSIANS WITH HIMARS | War in Ukraine Explained

“I am a Ukrainian. My country has been invaded by Russia. In this video I will tell you what happened on the four hundred and ninth day of the war.

Day 409: April 08

Today there are a lot of updates from the east. As Russians concentrated their efforts on taking the city block by block, almost all of Wagner forces elite personnel were deployed to Bakhmut. With the increased number of targets, Ukrainians started accumulating more artillery systems, and as Russians started moving in their equipment inside the city, Ukrainians started using HIMARS to target buildings that they use as warehouses.

Last time I told you that the speculations about Ukrainians conducting a tactical withdrawal toward the railways was correct. I also told you that over the course of 2 days, Ukrainians were stepping back by back by 1 or 2 streets per day, maintaining a straight front line.

The freshest reports suggest that the rate of withdrawal remained the same as in previous days because today, the front line also shifted approximately by 1 street. In the upper center, Ukrainians reportedly left the eastern part completely because staying there for a long would cost Ukrainians a lot of losses. This area is almost entirely comprised of 1- or 2-story houses, which are surrounded by the industrial zone and high-rise buildings. So, these positions were pretty weak, and Ukrainians left them in one go.

In the bottom center, the situation is more complex. Here, Ukrainians are relying on 2 lines of high-rise buildings, which allows for a slower-paced withdrawal. After Wagner forces established control over the stadium Metalurg, the line of contact moved towards the Church of all Saints. The latest reports indicate that Russians entered the high-rise building at the intersection, which allowed them to secure control over the church and half of the park.

When it comes to the territory south of this park, it is still under Ukrainians control. For now, the clashes are reportedly taking place in front of school #7. The buildings nearby help to create a powerful block, which gives a relative advantage and allows to exert significant control over the southern outskirts. Such a setting explains a slower rate of Russian advancement. Nonetheless, when it comes to the stadium Avangard, after several days of intense clashes, Ukrainians were reportedly pushed out of this area and are now holding the line along Kovalska Street.

The new setting also gives more work for Ukrainians snipers. After assuming control over new streets, Wagner forces are yet unfamiliar with which areas are under total sniper control, which leads to a higher toll when trying to cross the streets. One of the Ukrainian sniper units released a video showing how he hunts a Wagner soldier in the gardens in the suburbs.

Ukrainian Commander of the Forces in Bakhmut also released a video today and showed how 4 HIMARS are sending 24 rockets to hit Russian targets in Bakhmut. Some sources say that the targets are located on the territory of the AZOM industrial complex. As you remember, previously, Ukrainians already hit one of the workshops with a ballistic missile Tochka-U, so the use of HIMARS would indicate of continuation of this campaign.

Today a Ukrainian fighter from Aidar Battalion published a video showing Ukrainian positions, and said that they are no longer under Ukrainian control. This a very unfavorable development because it suggests that Russians finally managed to cross Korsunskogo Street and establish control over at least one block of houses. The latest updates indicate that the second block is in the grey zone, while the third one is held by Ukrainians. It is highly likely that Ukrainians are going to conduct a limited counterattack here because allowing Russians to stay means that they would have fire control over a vast area.

Overall, the most important fights are taking place in the central part of the city, where Ukrainians are trying to conduct a careful withdrawal, while Russians are trying to take advantage of the fluid setting, push Ukrainians as hard as they can and force them to retreat earlier than they are ready in order to collapse the front line. So far, Ukrainians have managed to maintain a relatively straight front line, so no Russian breakthrough is expected.”
