Moment Ukrainian troops storm across no man’s land firing assault rifles as Kyiv inflicts ‘significant losses’ on Russian forces with hundreds more killed in battle of Bakhmut
Russia and Ukraine remain locked in a battle for the city of Bakhmut in Donetsk

Body camera footage shows the moment Ukrainian soldiers burst forward in a charge across no man’s land, pinning down enemies before breaching a position near Bakhmut.

Gunfire is heard as members of the 24th Assault Battalion Aidar move across open ground, suppressing opposing forces with a spray of automatic fire as they push towards cover.
The men take brief respite, stacking up against a wall as another soldier looks to breach one of the buildings.

The Battalion is on the frontline of the city, fighting for control of the region which has been the longest-running and bloodiest battle of Moscow’s invasion.

Ukraine said today that Russia’s Wagner mercenary group, which has claimed to be leading Moscow’s charge for the industrial city, was pushing forward into the industrial city.

‘Wagner assault units are advancing from several directions, trying to break through our troops’ defensive positions and move to the centre of the city,’ the Ukrainian military said in a morning briefing. ‘In fierce battles, our defenders are inflicting significant losses on the enemy.’

Russia suffered its deadliest day of the war over the weekend with 1,090 claimed to have died on Saturday amid the desperate push for control of the city.

He added: ‘The closer we are to the city centre, the more difficult the battles get and the more artillery there is... Ukrainians are throwing endless reserves [at the fight].’

Ukraine has said its strategy with the defence of Bakhmut is to degrade Russia’s ability to launch any further offensive in the coming months and buy time to ready its bid to recapture ground.

Russian ‘human wave’-style attacks have rapidly depleted forces in recent months.

Russia is reported to have lost about 159,800 personnel, 3,474 tanks and 6,774 armoured combat vehicles since the start of the war, as of 13 March 2023.

Last week, elite armoured divisions were reported to have mutinied, tasked with another suicidal drive forward in Vuhledar, also in Donetsk.

The Ukrainian defenders claimed last week that Russia’s best units are pinned down in Bakhmut and said that they intend to continue to hold on, despite NATO warnings the city could fall within days.

Russia’s Wagner Group has reportedly been able to open recruitment centres to maintain the push into Bakhmut, despite intelligence that Prigozhin has likely lost access to recruiting from Russian prisons due to his ongoing clashes with the Russian MoD.

Russian forces have been conducting assault operations on the city of Bakhmut since August 2022.

By December, Zelensky reported that Russian shelling had turned the city into ‘burnt ruins’.

The slow war of attrition pushed both sides into murky, sodden trenches through the winter, hammered by artillery and trapped in close quarter battle (CQB) engagements.

Kyiv has cautioned that the city’s fall would give Russian forces a clear path into the contested Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine, which the Kremlin claimed to annex last year.

The victory for Putin would also offer a symbolic victory after being largely repelled from Ukraine in the early months of the war.

In mid-January, Russian forces celebrated the capture of the small town of Soledar to Bakhmut’s north.

The Ukrainian retreat at the end of January, deemed necessary to ‘preserve our personnel’, edges Russian forces further west.

The Russian victory over Soledar came at the cost of ‘colossal resources in lives and equipment’, said military command spokesperson Colonel Sergei Cherevaty.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, now more than a year old, has seen arms imports into Europe almost double in 2022, driven by massive shipments to Kyiv, which has become the world’s third-largest arms destination, researchers said Monday.

‘The invasion has really caused a significant surge in demand for arms in Europe, which will have further effect and most likely will lead to increased arms imports by European states,’ Pieter Wezeman, a senior researcher at the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), told AFP.

Russia’s attack has had ‘devastating’ consequences for children in residential institutions, with thousands transferred to occupied territories or to Russia, Human Rights Watch also said Monday.

‘This brutal war has starkly shown the need to end the perils faced by children who were institutionalised,’ said Bill Van Esveld, associate children’s rights director at the New York-based organisation.

At least several thousand children have been transferred to Russia or occupied territories, the report said.

Is there ammunition for the doomed Russian outdated tanks? Remember, last week you were trumpeting the Russian infantry had no ammunition. I’m assuming all of those Russians from last week’s disinfo must be dead or captured. Is this the last stand for Putin? All infantry gone, only outdated tanks left to save Russia. You are as credible as a climate change fanatic. I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt since you’re not making money of the Uke corruption scam and color you useful idiot.

Sniper, ‘callous nun’: “my husband didn’t want to let me go to war. But he knows my character - and he knew it was useless.”
Resonance Censor.
3-10-2023 08:00
Author: Evgeny Kuzmenko
https://censor.net/ua/resonance/3402335/snayiper_pozvnoyi_monashka_muj_ne_hotel_menya_otpuskat_na_voyinu_no_on_moyi_harakter_znaet_y_ponymal

A week ago I asked her how she was doing. Got an answer: “I was busy with my Lyalechka today.” Probably corresponded with her daughter, the journalist of the Censor thought. – Or with my granddaughter. And then a photo came to the messenger.

It turned out that Lyalechka is a Ukrainian sniper rifle “KHADO”.

Meet the hero of this interview: a sniper, a call sign of a Nun, in a “secular” life – a shooting coach, a master of sports of international class. Now he is fighting near Bakhmut.

- And how long have you been doing this “Lyalechka” of yours? – I ask the Nun.

- From one o’clock in the afternoon to six.

- And before that, what kind of weapons were used?

- With a kalash. I’m still on duty, like infantry in the trenches, for two days. We conduct full surveillance, we carry out communication-transmission by radio: from where the shooting is, what the enemy uses; if at night – from where it climbs, what to do, adjusting the mortar if necessary - closing the mining system... In general, full combat readiness with a machine gun in hand. If someone climbs or an assault begins, we report the alarm and repel immediately. Submachine guns, machine guns, RPGs - all on edge. While everything is calm - we are waiting, watching, reporting.

- This is your “Lyalechka”, can you give her a working characteristic?

- To be honest, it’s a little heavy. When you crawl, you have to drag her along with you.

“How much does it weigh?”

- 16.5 kg without sight.

- Dear mother! And if with a sight, and all the rest of the cargo? How will you work with her now?

- The fact is that I already have my own purchased weapons. And not what is in the project - it has already been paid for, and there is a permit. The thermal imaging sight is also lying. Everything is tailored to me – to make it more convenient; to have a better result. But due to bureaucratic delays, I can’t pick up this weapon in Kiev in any way.

- And what model are we talking about?

- I can’t say yet. But it’s lighter, more sniper-like, tailored to my goals and capabilities.

- How do snipers treat their weapons in general?

- Ideally, you should have complete unity with weapons. As a good driver, you have to be an extension of the steering wheel. And for a sniper, this should be developed even more: you should feel your rifle like your own hand, even more. And I’m not saying this because I’m a sniper right now. It’s just that I’ve been shooting since I was 12 years old and I know that if you don’t have this unity with weapons, it’s useless to work.

In training, there are targets, then there are not…

- When people hear about female snipers, they often have a stereotypical reaction: they say, she is probably a biathlete. You have a different story, although you also joined the army from sports - only shooting. Tell us about how you made the decision to go to war, and how you got into your unit.

- I made the decision back in 2015, but I was not very persistent in this intention. They just don’t take it like that – just because you had a sports career. Here I am a shooting coach, a master of sports of international class, a European champion. But this does not apply to the war. And I’m not conscripted. And then they immediately refused me – and I didn’t insist much.

There were attempts to be an instructor. Not really either. Then the war was kind of stuck. But despite the fact that I already had a passport, I immediately told my husband that if I went anywhere, it would only be towards the front. I don’t know why I decided that. I was infuriated by this hypocrisy, lies. I wanted to resist him. After all, this is out of the question!

- Did your husband try to object to you? Didn’t say “where are you going, stay at home”?

- Of course he did. Because we have a normal relationship – and everything is fine in our family. He was very against it. Absolutely didn’t want to let me go. But he knows my character - and understood that it was useless. It’s better not to interfere.

- What happened a year ago? Did you go to the military enlistment office?

- Yes, I went to the military enlistment office. At the end of March, because in the first days of the war she fell ill with coronavirus. The military enlistment office said: yes, we will take you, you can come in handy. – When? – When they come.

- And where do you and your husband live?

- In the Poltava region. In general, I realized that it would not be possible to go to the military enlistment office just like that - and to be taught there. Because my shooting experience is one thing. And it’s also necessary to transfer all this to military rails…

I heard how our people were taken and taught something there. For 2 weeks they sat in some buildings, cleaned the machines, sorted them out - and that’s it…

Then several more times I went to the military enlistment office and to our defense ministry. But they were sitting there, doing nothing - just waiting. They say that when they come, then we will do something.

I’ve already prepared a partisan place for myself in the forest – such a place to go there with a car. So that when everything melts in the spring, no one will go there. I won’t leave, but they won’t stop there either. Now, of course, it sounds funny.

- That is, you would be there in the forest. And the husband? Where was he in your plan?

- Together, probably. Actually, I wanted him to leave. It was the opposite with us - as if I was Dad and Dad was Mom. I wanted to send my husband and children somewhere safe.

- What happened next?

- I started trying to get somewhere. I moved to Poltava. There I started my briefings. I talked, shared my experience. And I went to briefings on other types – sapper business, combat tactics. We even went to the shooting…In general, for 4-5 months I lived there in an administrative building on the floor, on the cover of the sofa. And during this time, I passed the basic training that was loaded with those who wanted to be ready for war. JERELO: https://censor.net/ua/r3402335

And throughout this period in Poltava, I went to all the structures where I could be taken somewhere. And when the recruitment was announced in the Azov Kyiv MTR, I also applied there, and they wrote to me to come to Kiev for an interview. I arrived, brought the documents, showed everything, told - and they decided to take me. It was in the middle of September.

- That is, since the beginning of autumn, you have been at war. Tell me, are you the only woman in your unit?

- No, but there are very few women here: one is a medic, the other is engaged in auto (I don’t know what her position is). I have very little contact with them, because we are far away.

- You are based somewhere in the Bakhmut area. How do you like the men’s team? Is there no need to be a man more than men themselves?

- Both bad and good. Of course, there are men everywhere who are against women in the army.

- I remember the famous movie “Soldier Jane”.

- Only you have to be like that to stay here.

- What are you setting yourself up for? What exactly should you not concede to men?

- In no case should you give psychological slack.

- And what can this weakness be expressed in?

- Cry. Morally give up, say that, here, I can no longer, let me go home. Something like that.

But so far I haven’t had such thoughts. My goal is to continue to fight, to fight, to go to the trenches, to be on duty - to do anything just to be useful. JERELO:

- But sometimes I want to cry.

“Sometimes, yes. of course. From despair. When you want to do more good, but it turns out that you can’t - because of some nonsense.

- Because of what nonsense? Give an example.

- Well, even the situation with this rifle, which I can’t pick up now. I’d work nights then.

“Why can’t you take her?” What is the difficulty?

- I can’t go to Kiev. Bureaucratic red tape, you can’t just leave here

- Can’t you have friends and acquaintances bring you weapons?

- You can’t, it’s a weapon. The permits said that only I needed to be there when receiving. It’s important for them to look me in the eye.

- How did you raise money for a rifle and a sight?

- I turned to familiar volunteers. I was just a volunteer before the war, helping homeless animals. And I have a lot of connections in volunteering. And when they found out that I was leaving, they immediately said: we will help, please contact.

- And how much does this weapon cost in general, which you can’t get yet?

- The “naked” weapon alone is about 150 thousand hryvnias, let’s say.

- And how much lighter is this weapon than a HADO rifle?

- HADO weighs 16.5, and that rifle is 7. With a sight, maybe it will pull 9.

- As for me, the difference is huge. Tell me, why do you have such a call sign – a Nun?

- (Smiles. – E.K.) I laugh when people ask me about it. The answer is: because I don’t make up, don’t shave, don’t swear, don’t drink, don’t smoke and don’t have sex.

- That is, so far, Nun, as such, you have not been engaged in sniper work yet. Here you get a weapon - and you hope to start soon. Tell our readers, what does a sniper do most of all? From the movies, the public has such a stereotype: the sniper only does what he lies and waits. Or he sits and waits. Is that true?

- In principle, yes. but I have already realized that snipers can have very different tasks. One word cannot describe it. But most of all – covert surveillance.

- What else?

- It is clear that the hunt. But there are a lot more things to prepare for her than just for observation.

- What is usually included in the equipment of a sniper? How much weight do I have to carry with me?

- If we assume that I will not work with this rifle, then about 25 kilograms. This is if to the maximum.

- And what is included in this cargo? Rifle…

- BK. The second type of weapon - there must also be a machine gun. Cartridges for both types of weapons. Binoculars, thermal imager, rangefinder, power banks – depending on how much you go. The brakes. Water.

- And what does a powerbank need to recharge?

- To recharge the thermal imager and, possibly, the tablet. Ideally, each sniper should have a map and a tablet for orientation.

- Have you already been provided with all this?

- Yes, volunteers. I now have a greenhouse. I have everything except my tablet. I was preparing in advance for the fact that I would get everything myself. Because I didn’t want to wait or beg from someone.

- You are a volunteer. Do you have any idea when you will have a rotation?

- no. On the contrary, I don’t want any rotations. I want to be here more and be useful.

Nun: “It’s me who trains self-control. Line up the pellets in a column so that they do not fall. As much as possible...”

- I hope that everything will work out for you. Nun, for us amateurs, snipers are usually depicted hiding somewhere in the bushes, mountains or on a tree. Is it portrayed correctly?

- (Laughs. – E.K.) On a tree is the most dangerous place. Because trees are shot at the most. If the positions are somewhere far away.

- Okay, let’s take the area in the Bakhmut area. What will be the main cover for a sniper in those parts?

- These are steppes and drops - low, but sharp. Waste heaps. A flat field, and then a ridge of some relatively low steep hills. It’s like it was poured a long time ago. There was a quarry of some kind, but now it has turned into a natural landstaff. Something like that.

- While waiting for weapons, how are your trainings going now?

- I train more in physics, physio – cardio, squats, push-ups, running and jumping with a machine gun. There is no pure sniper training now, because it is pointless. We need to train with our own already. When I personally have my weapon, then there will be sniper training. But not with someone else’s weapon. It is better to take some kind of load.

- - They say that enemy snipers are not captured. Is it so or not so?

- I can only judge about this by rumors, too. No one likes snipers at all. They don’t like their own either.

- why?

- The sniper shoots and leaves – and then they fall asleep in position. The sniper acts separately, and does what he wants.

- It turns out that snipers only have to communicate with each other?

- Probably, yes. but it doesn’t bother me. I love being alone. I calmly treat a very small circle of communication. I can not communicate with anyone for a long time at all. Except with a partner – you can’t be completely alone. But the smaller my social circle, the more comfortable I am. JERELO:

- And who did you train as a coach? Children?

- Yes, the initial groups. We worked together with my husband: I coached children in the primary group, and then the best went to him in the group of senior sports excellence.

- So your husband is a colleague?

- He’s my former coach. I came to study with him as a child - and then we got married.

- And what about the children you coached? Are they trying to contact you somehow? Are they aware that you are at the front?

- Yes, those who are still shooting and are under contract in Ukraine - we are in contact with them. They are already 35 years old. The fact is that my husband and I did all this in Krivoy Rog. And now we have moved to Poltava region. Therefore, we are no longer directly connected with them.

- Are there any of them who are already at the front?

- yes. there is. I communicate with them, they are also in the same, sniper, profession.

- It turns out that you have also prepared a whole galaxy of snipers?

- Well, I trained them when they were still little. Then they are on their own. Two snipers, the third is just a company foreman. There are already two injuries, he is in the hospital now.

- Nun, on behalf of the readers, then I wish you to finally pick up your weapons and realize your talent in this war. To make you feel like you are bringing maximum benefit. As a full-fledged combat unit.

- Thank you! This is the most important thing. JERELO: https://censor.net/ua/r3402335

March 13, 2023;

- Bakhmut continues to be encircled by Russian forces;

- The Western media is reporting conflicting claims by Ukraine and Russia regarding steep losses inflicted on opposing sides;

- The West claims Ukraine is inflicting huge losses on Russian forces and that Bakhmut has little strategic value;

- The Western media, however, also admits Ukraine is outgunned between 3:1 to 4:1 in terms of artillery and despite claims that Russia has lost 20,000-30,000 troops around Bakhmut alone, the BBC’s own project verifying Russian losses says as of March 2023 Russia’s 1 year total losses stand at 16,000;

- A counteroffensive by Ukraine may lead to temporary gains, just as in Aleppo, Syria in 2016, however the fundamentals leading to Bakhmut’s encirclement have not been addressed, therefore any gains risk being reversed;

- A Ukrainian counteroffensive on any major scale will divert troops meant for Kiev’s spring offensive, diminishing the combat potential of other upcoming offensives;

- Poland’s military build-up is being hyped by the Western media, however Polish ambitions would see the creation of a military force roughly the size of Ukraine’s military at the beginning of 2022;

- Poland’s build-up will take years to complete;

Russia’s war hawks say attrition has backfired in Ukraine: ‘We have no rounds’
by Joel Gehrke, Foreign Affairs Reporter |
March 13, 2023 06:54 PM
https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/policy/defense-national-security/russia-attrition-backfired-no-rounds

Russia suffers from an ammunition shortage that extends beyond the Wagner Group mercenary forces, according to Russian complaints from the front that express anxiety about a Ukrainian counteroffensive.

“It’s not the issue of Wagnerites — the issue is about the whole front — everyone is lacking,” said Yuri Mezinov, a pro-Kremlin political figure from a Russian border region. “There are no rounds, you understand? None.”

Mezinov voiced his dismay amid a bloody slog around Bakhmut that has exposed bitter disputes between Wagner Group leadership and the Russian Defense Ministry, as well as numerous public protests from conscripts sent on doomed assaults. Their frank complaints argue that the Moscow’s embrace of a war of attrition has backfired — a stunning assessment, for pro-Kremlin analysts, that runs contrary to Russia’s historical reputation for mustering overwhelming numbers of men and materiel in wartime.

“Our boys are dying in hundreds. Not just boys, but the best of my people, Russian people, their generation, their grandchildren and great grandchildren will never be,” said Mezinov, per the War Translated Project. “I saw a lad — today he is gone. Because he diddm’t have enough artillery support. Along the whole front, we have a command to attack, we attack without fire support. Do we have problems with metal? Problems with metallurgists? Who can tell me? How is this possible?”

FEUD BETWEEN MERCENARIES AND RUSSIAN GOVERNMENT NEARS ‘BOILING POINT’ IN BAKHMUT

Russian forces have concentrated on Bakhmut for months in a protracted struggle that at times has caused Western officials to fear that Ukrainian military leaders had been sucked into a battle that would end in either defeat or a pyrrhic victory. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s team insists that they have turned the tables on Russian President Vladimir Putin, such that Russia is throwing away “a large part of its trained military personnel” through unrelenting attacks on well-defended positions.

“The real heroes now are the defenders who hold the eastern front on their shoulders and, sparing neither themselves nor their enemies, inflict maximum losses on them,” Ukrainian Gen. Oleksandr Syrskyi, commander of the Ukrainian military’s Ground Forces, said Saturday. “It is necessary to buy time to accumulate reserves and start a counteroffensive, which is not far off.”

That outlook breaks with conventional wisdom in Western security circles, even those most supportive of Ukraine’s war aims. Some of the most recent and dramatic initiatives to send military aid to Ukraine have been taken on the understanding that a longer war plays into Putin’s hands.

“This is the time if we want to bring this to a successful conclusion — and, of course, we should, and we do — we should look to bring it to a conclusion quickly,” British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said during a trip to Washington in January.

Paradoxically, Russia’s struggles around Bakhmut have sparked a disagreement in militarist circles about whether Ukrainian forces will launch a counter-offensive — or whether such a campaign is even necessary.

“I’m almost confident that this is ‘misinformation’ — otherwise, the military leaders would not be announcing it to the whole world,” said Igor Girkin, a former Russian intelligence officer and commander in Russia’s initial invasion of Ukraine in 2014. “As part of the generally successful (for the enemy) conclusion of the ‘battle of attrition and gain of time’ that was deliberately carried out during the winter campaign by the command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, no counteroffensives are needed.”

Prigozhin’s associates seem to fear an extensive attempt to sweep back Russian forces in eastern Ukraine.

“What is happening at the front really cannot but suggest that by accumulating forces along the entire line of contact ... and in the Donbas, the enemy is preparing something like a revanche,” assessed an author at Reverse Side of the Medal, a Telegram channel affiliated with the Wagner Group, according to the War Translated project. “The maneuvers carried out by the command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, with a high degree of probability, are evidence of Kyiv’s preparations for a large-scale offensive.”

That offensive, the author continued, could break the land bridge between Russia and the occupied Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea — the strategically crucial territory where the war began in 2014.

“The loss of control over the Kherson region will mean the enemy’s approach to the borders of Crimea,” the RSOTM writer said. “As a result, the peninsula may be cut off from land communications. In no case are we trying to cause panic, we are simply analyzing the facts that are available and must be taken into account in combat planning.”

Such an extensive assault would test Russia’s ability to provide adequate supplies to forces that reportedly are ill-equipped for assault.

“Along the whole front, we have a command to attack; we attack without fire support. Do we have problems with metal? Problems with metallurgists? Who can tell me? How is this possible? How is this limit possible?” Mezinov said. “We have a limit because we fired indiscriminately without air reconnaissance ... because someone didn’t think it through.”

Mezinov, a pre-offensive enthusiast for the war who claimed to be driving through a town in the Russian-occupied territory of Luhansk, predicted that the Russian conscripts would collapse in the absence of better-trained and equipped fighters.

“If our boys get shredded, I’m confident the mobiks standing behind them won’t cope; they won’t do anything,” the Rostov businessman said. “This happens along the whole front. In the most metal-rich country, with grand metallurgic cities — we have no rounds.”

Sergei Naumenko from Nizhny Novgorod was imprisoned for murder, although he still believes that he was punished too harshly. He agreed to become a mercenary in Wagner’s group to get his criminal record expunged, but now regrets his decision. In an interview with Liubomyr Ferens, Serhiy describes in detail the work of Russian “justice”, the order in prisons and among mercenaries, says he is ashamed and calls on Russians to refuse to participate in the aggressive war.
