MONTEREY — The sudden death of Monterey Peninsula College defensive line coach Ofa Hautau has left a void and a deep wound in the football family and coaching fraternity in the county.
The one-time Pacific Grove High and MPC football standout died in his sleep at his home on his 30th birthday Friday, leaving the Lobos athletic department in complete shock.
“This one hit us pretty hard,” MPC track and field coach Nick Cunningham said. “It still doesn’t seem real. It’s like no way. I just saw him Thursday. He was very a motivating and supportive individual. He made you want to be better.”
MPC athletic director Wendy Bates and members of the student health service met with the football team on Tuesday, offering counseling and support for students-athletics and coaches on the staff and in the athletic department. “We just reminded them to take care of each other, that we have services and counseling available to them if needed,” Bates said. “We want to make sure the student-athletes feel supported. We reminded them we’re a Lobo family.”
Hautau was one of head coach Ronnie Palmer’s first hires when he took over the program in 2020. The two had already built a relationship when Hautau played for the Lobos when Palmer began his coaching career as an assistant in 2012.
“He was a young big-eyed kid that was so loving, peaceful and animated,” Palmer said. “It was always a joy to get him going. It was an easy choice to hire him when he came back after his playing career to take this job.”

This is terrible! So young, working hard, then, gone.
If so, she has no right to console anyone. Or take part in others camaraderie.
Per the college’s website, their CoupFlu vaxx mandate has been suspended.
But the website doesn’t state when the suspension took place.

One of my sources listed five athletes that ‘died in their sleep’ just last week. I haven’t posted that because I wanted to check the facts behind the stories.
I read here that when the body wakes up there is a rush of chemicals released to get the heart pumping and it starts off quite hard. Ive been noticing it when I wake up now the increased heart rate.... Unvaxed thanks.
