What has that got to do with the consensus of the American public?
It has to do with the fact that MANY things start out NOT being the consensus, and what you call the fringe, but in our grandparents' time was common decency can be supported to forma new consensus.
But we had a consensus in Venezuela to stick it to successful capitalists, and the minority who disagreed were right. The consensus was wrong. Heck, even a little while ago a large number of states were ful of people who were going along with malarkey on masks and shots and lockdowns. People like me and other freepers who resistyed and pushed back were labeled fringe.

Well, there has been a longstanding consensus in favor of the mushy middle on abortion.
The people in charge of the national campaign didn’t even try for consensus among the voters because they had embraced this extreme position of abortion bans. Whether that was because of groupthink, a desire to throw the election to the Democrats, foreign interference by America’s enemies, I don’t know, but one thing I do know is that whatever in the heck they were doing managed to turn a major advantage for the Republicans going into the midterms into an unexpectedly good year for Joe Biden.
All they have to do is to do their jobs. Is that really too much to ask?!
