Vanity: Getting stalked by police on roadways.
EVO X Times | Aug 3, 2022 | Evo X

I've had a clean driving record for close to 30 years. Every few years a cop will latch on and give me a driving test which I have passed. I thought I would report on today's test. It is clear in my mind I was clearly getting stalked. After the traffic light changed to green, the police car was slow to respond to the traffic light and didn't keep up with traffic flows. The question I have are police officers immune from distracted driving laws?

I just show him my “white privilege” card. With a grin, he says “carry on, sir.”

I once got pulled over on my way home from work by a young local PD officer. I pulled into a parking lot at the community center, he pulled in behind me, walked up to my driver side window and then started apologizing profusely for mistaking my "granny straps" on my sunglasses for earbuds in my ears.

Then he left.

If you weren’t pulled over then you weren’t “stalked”. You sound paranoid.

Is your car equipped with a rear view mirror and side mirrors?

Back around 1981 I owned a Triumph TR-8; essentially a TR-7 with a GM aluminum small block V-8 in it. Plus I had some aftermarket stuff on it from Huffaker.

NET: it would fly.

One day I was driving from Lake Charles, LA to Baton Rouge, at night, and by about 10 PM or so I was on the elevated section of I-10 above the Atchafalaya Swamp. About 20 miles straight as an arrow. I was behaving myself, in a group of about 10 vehicles. I ended up at the front of that group when a white Plymouth Fury drove right next to me in the left lane, and PERSISTED in driving right next to me.

I slowed a little, the Fury did too. I sped up a little, and the driver would ease right next to me. This persisted for several miles. Looking over I could see a fellow slumped against the right passenger window sound asleep, but I could not see the driver in the dark.

In Louisiana drunk drivers were a common issue, so I decided to resolve the issue by speeding up a good bit, to maybe 75. The driver positioned his car right next to me. Now the Plymouth Fury was nothing special - just a bland 4 door sedan. So knowing I could shed this guy using my right foot, I decided to get well in front of him using my right foot.

So I floored it.

In a few seconds I was passing through 120 MPH and leaving the Fury WAAY behind. And we were just coming down off the elevated portion on the east end of the Swamp onto regular I-10 east, a little west of Port Arthur.

That’s when he turned on the blue lights in his grill.

I was far enough ahead that I had time to easily pull over, think about how I would call my wife from jail to get the car towed and my bail handled when the police car kinda slowly pulled up behind me on the shoulder.

The LA State trooper (driver) comes up to my window and immediately asks me “Do you know how FAST you were driving?”

Blueflag: Yessir, about 120 when you turned your lights on
Officer: [with incredulity in his voice] WHY were you driving so fast?
Blueflag: I thought you were a drunk; you kept driving RIGHT NEXT TO ME no matter how I changed speeds, so I sped away from you ... I knew I could.
Officer: [thinks for a bit] Well keep your speed LEGAL from now on! [and hands me back my license].

And off I went!

I’m in Oregon. Can’t remember the last time I saw a traffic cop. Almost non-existent.

How is that a "driving test"?

Are you been smoking marijuanas?

You have way, way too much time—and too few troubles—in your life.

are police officers immune from distracted driving laws?

Any police officer is probably going to have the police radio, the in-car computer, plate reader, blaring all at the same time, all while be on agressive preventive patrol. It is easy to be distracted by all of that.

In high school my buddy was driving drunk, got pulled over and somehow passed the walking, touch nose test. Waiting for his license as the police ran a check, he passed out. I had to wake him up before the officer came back.

I can't imagine doing something as stupid as to be a car with a drunk driver today.

Clearly it is clear, and it could not be more clear you were clearly and are still clearly being stalked and it will be clear and remain clear going forward that you were clearly being stalked.

I was driving home from work one night, stopped at a traffic signal, when a cop whipped in behind me. I immediately wondered what I had done. The light changed, I drove on, and he pulled in at the Dunkin Donuts.

Just this past weekend a CT man was arrested on RT 93 south in NH going 161 mph in a 2021 Corvette. It made the local news.

I had heard that the proper and safe distance between cars is about 3 seconds. So, the distance increases with an increase in speed.

When someone is tailgating me, I ease off the gas and slow down until they are 3 sec behind me. Most people will pass me as soon as it’s safe. I’ve never had that happen with a police officer, but I’ll bet it would work and get them off your tail.

That worked Monday. I have a thin blue line sticker on my back window.

I was doing 85 in a 70 and a State Police officer was coming down the on ramp when I passed it.

He was right behind me. Let my foot off the gas got to mid 70’s in a 70 and he changed lanes and passed me.

Possitive it was the sticker. It was from an official thin blue line event we hosted at our Sportsman’s Club the previous weekend.
