Watched Top Gun Maverick: Made Me Laugh Throughout

Posted on 06/10/2022 7:15:53 AM PDT by DIRTYSECRET

Guess I'm different. From the very beginning. As the planes took off to my favorite Foghat music the ground(deck) crew, through their signals and mannerisms were acting like they were choreographed dancers, not crewmen.

Manly, machismo. I dig it man! Then there's the big man-hugs. Makes you think that in adversity all our societal problems are solved regarding feminism and race. All that Gung-ho stuff just had to make me laugh. Been there-done that.

Seeing Val Kilmer again was touching. Ed Harris? A cameo-looked too old to be a still-serving admiral. Glen Powell, the Hangman character looked like the young version of Maverick but didn't make the cut. I don't get it. Monica Barbedro as Phoenix did. Hot? You betcha-but a Top Gun? Come on! Think Kelly McGillis as an instructor.

Rooster, the one who resented Mitchell, was effeminate. Had feelings. Good subplot. Forgiving in the end.

Tom cruise as a tough guy.....still not believable.....in any movie IMO. Guess I can’t get past the scientology thing.

I agree though....Collateral made me laugh.

Let’s not forget the Dirty Harry factor. Cruise gets called on the carpet for going out of bounds and is in danger of getting fired. Then like inspector Callahan something comes up and they have no one else to do the job.

Yawn fest. Plot copied Star Wars IV. Test crash copies Right Stuff, but absurdly. Romantic interest owns yacht and a Porsche? Awful.

So Pete Mitchell and Rooster get shot down together over enemy territory. They see an F-14 or such sitting in a hanger loaded up with gas/ammo and ready to go. They steal it. Come on.

After 40 years as a professional pilot flying movies turn me off. People who fly like that would be grounded faster than you can imagine, Air Force, Navy, Airline..seriously discouraged or mostly not allowed at all..

Haven't watched the movie, probably won't ...

They see an F-14

Were they in Iran? That's the only country currently operating the F-14.

There’s more-It’s the role of blacks and their place in the flick. They’re the supportive ones acknowledging Pete Mitchells expertise. They’re also the level-headed ones while all the whites acting out their gung-ho machismo. The blacks let them be big dumb whitey. Hilarious.

*Were they in Iran?* It points to it.

The good news is that there was no overt politics in the flick. Very patriotic. Hollywood recognizes this and people are flocking to see it. Glad I went but gotta admit it was stupid. Too many on the left AND right enjoy being led around like this.

As a career fighter pilot (A-10 and F-15E), have flown low level in special use airspace, but for day to day ops, nope, grounded for sure.

The Navy has different rules but they aren’t THAT different.

It’s just a movie, entertainment, and like all fiction, suspending disbelief is required.

He’s more suited,to his mission impossible roles, but yeah even there they overplay his toughness- his character is more geared towards high-tech sneakiness- not tough guy crap. He just doesnt pull tough guy off well

FYI, to his credit, Tom Cruise left scientology.

I like him but it’s obvious the guy’s done steroids to get so buffed up they way a lot of actors and athletes have done over the years.

You can almost always tell about the steroid thing. Their body is too bulgy, their eyes tend to bug out, and becsue they have certain unexplainable weird, often self-destructive, behaviors.

(Corticosteroids reduce GABA, leading to anxiety, changes in mood, depression, seizure disorders, and a decreased capacity to cope with chronic pain. https://journals.lww.com/nursingmadeincrediblyeasy/fulltext/2021/01000/mental_status_changes_with_corticosteroid_therapy.11.aspx#:~:text=Corticosteroids%20reduce%20GABA%2C%20leading%20to,regulates%20memory%20and%20emotional%20processing.)

With Cruise, he just kept going off the deep end to where, for awhile, it seemed nobody would hired him for a role.

So the scientology thing is gone but I don’t how long the steroid side-effects last.

I saw Maverick for a second time to see if I missed anything. Nope. Jennifer Connelly has a great a**. Overall, I liked the movie.

That said, I have some plot criticisms.

I think Cruise borrowed a lot of dialogue from Eastwood’s Heartbreak Ridge where gunny is told that he was a dinosaur as a marine. I suppose this dialogue was to emphasize that this was going to be Maverick’s last mission.

Why did Maverick feel compelled to assign Brewster to the strike team? As a confidence booster? As a payback to goose? Why did Val care who he took? The whole let it go thing seemed strange. Would Maverick feel better if Brewster got killed?

Also it was a stretch that the rogue regime had F 14s gassed, armed and ready to go while having 5th generation fighters. Where did they get parts and maintenance?

The only time I laughed out loud was when Bob was asked what his call name was and he said Bob. That was a good one.

Yeah but that is whatnmakes it an “action movie” ie unrealistic, and loads of action- it’s what people, want. Boxing movies are totally fake too, and the championship in them woild be pumilated to pulp 1/2 through first round in real life by a relatively boxer, but we like, the movies as an escape, from the absurdity of real life, into a realm of the absurdity of movie life. Plus it’s cool to see vehicles git blown up real, good

Got roped into going by my GF. 2.5 hours of exposure to Tom Cruise is borderline Geneva Convention definition of torture...although I will say that when he came on the screen before the movie, it was refreshing to see him acknowledge the audience and describe how and why the movie was made. Maybe he got over the scientology!

Look up Admiral John Duncan Bulkeley - met him shortly before he retired for the second time at 77.
