Didn’t Russian say one of their goals was to neutralize the Ukrainian military? Then independence for Luhansk and Donetsk? Kharkiv is not in those regions. Do you all think this is a hit and run operation to wear down the Ukrainian military?

They said the same thing about Kyiv. If it were so, it is a very costly hit and run operation — 20,000 dead and even more badly wounded seems like a chess game where you sacrifice your valuable pieces in order to win the game. There may be a method to the madness but I fail to see it.

No.
All these things have accomplished is wearing down the Russkie military, with units actively refusing to go forward and running from the battlefield. Morale is collapsing for the Russkies all along their territory.

The reason I asked is it sounds kind of like the Confederate raiders in the Civil War, just go in hit and leave.

It is a retreat out of the Kharkiv Front. Plain and simple. They are tapping out in the part of the war and pulling back behind their own border.
well if they are gonna lob nukes in there it would make sense to get your guys out.
Putin really wants this in his legacy. He wants to use some nukes. No question about it.
Sometimes hit and run works (Afghanistan vs. Soviets, US, Vietnam vs. US) sometimes not (Confederate vs. Union). That’s why I asked.
They have to finish Odessa first so Putin can have all that beachfront property.

He drops hikes on kharkiv, blowback will fall on Russian territory. By that I mean radiation fallout from the bomb, as kharkiv is close to Russian territory
Putin strikes me as someone that would nuke his own troops if he thought they had underperformed.
Its all about logistics. Now that the Russian Navy is being harassed effectively the Russians cannot supply their troops with fuel, ammunition and replacements in southeastern Ukraine. Apparently they are having great difficulty resupplying across land borders with Ukraine. Simply put Russian troops in Ukraine are becoming more combat ineffective daily. Hard to maintain morale in such circumstances.
IMHO 1russia cannot win. However it is a made mistake for Western leaders to not pursue a diplomatic settlement but to totally humiliate Russia. A desperate Putin just might in his tormented state ( his career and almost all he accomplished leading Russia away from the Communist debacle has been destroyed) Desperate men often do irrational things. He just might deploy tactical nuclear weapons and risk the end of the world.
