Don’t expect me to switch from “Kiev” to “Kyiv” right away, unless the Ukrainians ask us to do it. It was only this month that I switched from calling it “the Ukraine” to just “Ukraine.”
Yes, changing names of foreign cities in English is one of my pet Pyeevs.
It will be a while yet before it’s Beijing Duck, or Chicken Kyiv, I think. I can’t find “Mumbai Sapphire” gin at the liquor store yet.
In most of the history books I’ve read (and they are legion!) there are places like Peking, Ceylon, Siam, Constantinople, and Persia!
And when everything old is new again, there’s St. Petersburg.
