The seeds of this current mess go back to when the western governments, including the US, were openly supporting ethnic breakaway states in the former Yugoslav republics. Remember Kosovo?
I still don't believe that, I think Putin is just saying those things from a negotiating point of view, but he is not going to directly attack a NATO country. He knows better than that. He's just using the NATO excuse to justify his moves in Ukraine.
But, of course, as Dennis Miller would say, "That's just my opinion, I could be wrong."

Agreed. That's where the opportunities were lost after the Cold War, to nip this crap in the bud. But the West decided to rub the Russians' nose in it, much as The Versailles Treaty rubbed Germany's noses in it, with tragic results.
Seems to have blind-sided our intelligence agencies, as well. Odd, since they claimed to have known just about everything about what the Russians were doing.

Putin is a bad guy but he is not a bad leader. Some may hate me saying that but one underestimates him at their own peril.
Putin is just going to march the Russian Army into Donbas. Maybe he’ll lead the parade bare chested on a horse. No need for any invasion since the border was destroyed 8 years ago by Russia.
