The first US case of the Omicron COVID strain has been confirmed in the state of California, Dr. Anthony Fauci announced during a press briefing on Wednesday.

The “variant of concern,” which has already been reported in seventeen countries, has now reached California, the president’s top medical adviser said while flanked by White House press secretary Jen Psaki.

Dr. Anthony Fauci said the infected individual, who was fully vaccinated, had just returned from South Africa to the San Francisco area on Nov. 22 and tested positive on Nov. 29.

Does anyone remember 20-30 years ago where we all joked about a cure for the common cold?

Yeah well not so much anymore.

Omicron is an anagram of MORONIC

This is why it was appropriate to show up in California first.

How is that possible… California has very strict Covid regulations and mandates.

But given what South African epidemiologists who have experience with Omicron said, it appears the this variant spreads easily but has little physical effects.

So literally 1 week ago some SA doctor starts wagging her tongue about Omicron and now we have our first USA case....yup...the deep state driven Butterfly effect crew is at it again...guaranteed to whip a nation into a frenzied panic in 1 week or less!/sarc

In two weeks due to psychiatric time compression Overton Window techniques, it will seem like we have always had Omicron and sorrowful music will accompany ads and news stories about full hospitals with no staff to care for the sick! Tails of people who can’t pay the rent and old men coughing and dying in the streets. Sad tales of Christmas 2021 without grandma...oh they have us pegged real well these deep state folks do!
Bahhh!

O rly?

Is there a test specific for this variant? Has there ever been a test for any specific variant?

And if Africa is a concern why have 1000 of the best young people from the Red states of Kentucky and Virginia just been shipped there?

Since the virus has up to two weeks for incubation, travel bans after the fact are pointless. The variant is all over before anyone even knows it exists.

Politicians, being morons, will do it anyhow along with all the other ineffective masks and lockdowns.

Fully vaxed... Can we admit that the shot doesn’t stop the spread? Or are we still blaming the unvaxed?

While your point is well taken the mean incubation period is around 5 days. It’s really an outlier if it goes beyond seven days.

However one could make bank that this variant is probably already well across the world. Given it’s transmissibility and minute symptoms there is. I reason to believe the index case was first described

If it holds that there are mild symptoms and high transmission this is the pandemic ender. It is also consistent with the natural evolution of a virus

So, this person was fully vaccinated; testing negative within 72 hours of entering the US; and was masked the entire flight and while in the airport. Still, he brought the virus into the US. Why don’t these experts finally admit that they really can’t stop the spread, and acknowledge that all these restrictions are theater.

Not exactly, but... All lineages of B.1.1.X cause an "S-Gene Target Failure" (SGTF) in a couple specific PCR tests that look at the S-Gene as well as the N and E genes. The Alpha Variant (B.1.1.7) gave the same SGTF result, and now Omicron (B.1.1.529) does. For now, labs are considering tests with SGTF as probable Omicron until they can be sequenced.
