I had hoped that the Chinese would take a different path where increasing freedom and prosperity would cause a kind of slow, soft revolution and war would become impossible because it would be too bad for business. But, this is not happening with the current crop of leaders, and the Chinese people don’t seem to be interested in doing anything about it.

They remember Tiananmen Square ... where over 10,000 were murdered at Deng’s order. Also because they know that, if they started a civil war, they might face over 40 million dead - as has happened in their past. Deng was a nice guy compared to Xi who is more Mao-like, viewing Han Chinese as all expendable to the survival of the CCP.
