Duh...

Why even offer satellite if the speed sucks. Raw speed is a given, latency and limits are the issue.

Streaming and Gaming is where speed really counts. Gaming is out because of latency, so streaming is all that’s left. Most streaming can adapt to sub-par speed to some degree.

If you are mostly using your connection for work you will probably be ok, just watching it for entertainment ( latency/limits) may be another issue.

Duh?

I’m just commenting on the difference between speed and data per month download limits.

As far as I know, the Starlink latency is super-low because they are a lot closer in a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) vice geosynchronous and many of them so you can download from multiple satellites at the same time.

I have no idea if Starlink will have a data limit.

Speed isn’t the biggest issue. Latency is still too high for gaming, but if you run out of capacity in the first week of the month you are screwed.

What will the prices be for a TB per month.

Yes. Those are good questions.

I don’t know if Starlink would even have a limit.

But if I have a choice, I’ll go for unlimited, even if that cost a little more.

25-35 ms latency is pretty good, actually, where I live in the middle of Nowhere, Alabama. But shared in the city?

Any way, promises, promises...

According to Elon Musk, per article (https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2020/03/musk-says-starlink-isnt-for-big-cities-wont-be-huge-threat-to-telcos/#:~:text=Latency%20of%20less%20than%2020ms%20would%20make%20Starlink,potential%20for%20sub-10ms%20latency%20sometime%20in%20the%20future.):

“SpaceX’s Starlink satellite broadband will have latency low enough to support competitive online gaming and will generally be fast enough that customers won’t have to think about Internet speed, Elon Musk said at a conference yesterday. Despite that, the SpaceX CEO argued that Starlink won’t be a major threat to telcos because the satellite service won’t be good enough for high-population areas and will mostly be used by rural customers without access to fast broadband.

“It will be a pretty good experience because it’ll be very low latency,” Musk said in a Q&A session at the Satellite 2020 conference (see video). “We’re targeting latency below 20 milliseconds, so somebody could play a fast-response video game at a competitive level, like that’s the threshold for the latency.

Latency of less than 20ms would make Starlink comparable to wired broadband service. When SpaceX first began talking about its satellite plans in late 2016, it said latency would be 25ms to 35ms. But Musk has been predicting sub-20ms latency since at least May 2019, with the potential for sub-10ms latency sometime in the future.”

This will be a boon to those living in remote areas but at that $99.00 price it can't compete anywhere else.

I suspect the price will eventually drop.

Distance = Latency, we’ll see.

We have a 1TB plan, use Internet and stream all day and we are pegging at 75%. We just make sure to pause or quit when leaving the room and use the Sleep function at night.

Too much 4k and you can see a difference.

No since going from $100 to $200 for nothing.

I live in Grants Pass and Spectrum has a deal they don’t publicize where you choose nine networks besides the basic ABC/CBS, etc., and they’ll sell that package to you dirt cheap.

I’m not in that, I’m on Silver, and they just told me that my bill is going to raise FORTY dollars! No way am I paying that!

Nice to talk with a fellow Southern Oregon freeper!

I thought about that but haven't been able to get by with 10 channels, may have to reconsider. No clue what I do have but I did cancel all the movie channels since I never watch them. I get Hulu with my Sprint mobile account and Prime which I use a lot and their TV stuff is included so there I am.

I actually do need the cable connection for recording and editing shows to make them family friendly for the rest of the family. As old as I am may give that up as well.

Be interesting to see how woke the TV shows I actually watch get. Gave up so many already for being terminally BLM, SJ or totally gay, will just watch old shows on YouTube or stuff I have recorded, they are all new to me anyway after a day or two.

There are some conservatives here but not as many as one might think. My daughter and grand daughter work in health care and they are in a minority as conservatives.

I live more in the Merlin area than Grants Pass but I guess you can't keep their hands out of our pockets.

I used to live in Merlin, that’s a great little town. I lived three houses up from the green bridge.

When I first moved here 35 years ago it was a lot more conservative, but it’s changing everywhere you look.

See ya, take care!

Yep and Ronald Reagan was governor in California twice, Liberalism is a disease and there is no effective treatment so it spreads until it is cut out.

Happy Trails Ed.
