In the past 5 elections, the Republican won the Electoral College three times but only won the popular vote once (2004).
I am very optimistic about the electoral college outcome (expect the President to win two or three more states from 2016), but my read (and I have crunched the numbers every which way) is that the final popular vote total will be too close to call.
Bill Clinton did not win the popular vote both times.
