I talked with a guy who was in prison in China during Mao’s famine (he had been in the Koumintang Army, fighting the communists).

Their reserve stock of frozen pork has dwindled by over 80% since this time a year ago. Estimates are four to six weeks supply remaining. Much is likely being diverted to storage directly under government supervision.
With all due respect I don’t think there are that poor people in China anymore. If China would have a shortage of food they’d buy it internationally like they already did.
