U.N.: Pandemic School Closures A ‘Generational Catastrophe’

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned world leaders that the coronavirus pandemic has led to an unprecedented disruption in education across the world and impacting millions of children.

Guterres’s remarks came in a recorded video released on Tuesday along with a 26-page policy brief over “education during COVID-19 and beyond.”

“The COVID-19 pandemic has led to the largest disruption in education ever. In mid-July, schools were closed in more than 160 countries, affecting over 1 billion students. At least 40 million children worldwide have missed out on education in their critical pre-school year,” Guterres said.

The U.N. secretary-general said that the impacts of school closures are hitting more than just students’ education, placing additional strain on parents and stifling sorely needed opportunities for children with disabilities or in poverty.

“We already faced a learning crisis before the pandemic. More than 250 million school-age children were out of school. And only a quarter of secondary school children in developing countries were leaving school with basic skills,” Guterres continued. “Now we face a generational catastrophe that could waste untold human potential, undermine decades of progress, and exacerbate entrenched inequalities. The knock-on effects on child nutrition, child marriage and gender equality, among others, are deeply concerning.”

The policy brief released alongside the secretary-general’s message outlines several key components to combatting the growing global education crisis. First, students must return to school as quickly as possible. ..

Or that the parents are wisely educating their children.

A year off from school won’t kill ya.

One might even learn something.

True. Still, though, going back to school would be part of returning to normal (in the minds of Joe Q. Public) and that would help Trump.

Exactly.

Less exposure to Bill Ayers-approved curriculum and K2 smoking useful idiots. If Common Core doesn’t induce psychosis, the “teacher” is doing it wrong.

People here on FR are thinking in terms of home-schooling parents taking over, etc. In most of the world...and even most of the US...that’s not going to happen.

It’s going to be bands of kids roaming the streets, first stealing stuff from shops, then killing anybody they meet to get something to live on.

Closing the schools is a disaster.

I do think a lot of people are underestimating the impact of this. The kids from decent homes are probably going to struggle, but pull through. For the vast majority of already marginal kids, inner city kids, this will be a catastrophe, not only for them, but for society for years or decades to come.

Does anyone think the kids already on the edges of education are going to have the family discipline to keep their kids focused on this remote learning? Does anyone think that educators are going to adhere to rigorous standards, or any standards, or are they just going shuffle kids along, even more so than they do now.

No, a lot of kids are going to really get lost and get even more marginalized than they now already may be and this is going to have serious social and economic impacts.

Finally, factor in teachers holding these kids hostage for more pay and more wokeness and I assure you not many are paying serious attention to the impact of this huge issue.

Just wait. Alpha children arise from elite parenting, while Betas are homeschooled during the pandemic. Gammas are left behind to do rote computer classes. Deltas will be given the basics and no more. Epsilons will be barely educated.

The lower classes will remain barely literate and reliably stupid voters. Alphas will remain insufferably arrogant.

Who said authors were not prescient?

This is one really good thing coming out of all of this nonsense. Shut down most public schools for good. With the new satellite network launched there will soon be nowhere on earth without the internet connectivity to support education. Some kids can stay at home and enroll in the new educational opportunities and those that need a bit more structure or are too young to leave unsupervised can go to a small private neighborhood tutoring business where troublemakers can be kicked out and left to the systems prisons for little people. Those with disabilities are entirely and intentionally screwed over by the public system so thats not an excuse to leave them open. There is an entire industry that provides appropriate education and societal adaptation opportunities for adults with disabilities so why shouldnt disabled children have the same chance to work toward whatever level of independence they are able to achieve?

The human race did fine without public education as we know it for the vast bulk of its history.

It’s only been within the last century or so that the method we are using has really become a factor, and you can see the deterioration of America follow that as they dumbed down and brainwashed succeeding generations of students.
