+. Chipped cards slowed checkout down. Ask any clerk.

Are you that out of it? When the NY Times (and many others) are outright saying that the COVID crisis is bringing in a cashless society, perhaps it’s time to listen? Do you get out much? Just go to the big stores and see what’s happening, how they take payments. It’s happening right NOW.

I remember specifically handing cashier a $10 Bill. The item was $7.75. Register was broken. After about 2 minutes He gave me 9.25. I asked how he got that. He said “75 and 25 are 1. 10 minus 1 is 9. So 9.25”. He then gave me a look like I was a dumbass for not knowing that. I said “thank you”...bonehead.

I don’t use cards of any kind. After being hacked 4 times one yr I cancelled my card and pay cash for everything. Course I write checks for utility bills etc.

A few years ago I saw a story about a long-time bar owner who had saved all his change over the years in jars, crocks, etc, in the bar basement.

I forget the exact amount he had but I want to say it was around $140,000 in change just sitting there.

If everyone across the country would cash in their change jars they’d probably still say there’s a coin shortage, because I don’t think there’s really a coin shortage.

Saving change in jars adds up fast! A friend of mine suggested saving $5 bills. Every time I had a 5 I’d put it in an envelope. After about 6 months (and 4 envelopes) I had just under $1000.00.

Some of it must depend on the processing system. The local Kroger takes about 15-20 seconds from card insertion to printing a receipt. The local Meijer can take up to a minute for the same thing. If I’m at the self checkout I can be halfway through bagging by the time the receipt is printed.

How many extra $20s or bigger did you have to get from the bank to do that? The save your change/ones/fives trick only works if it convinces you to not spend frivolously, so you decide not to break a 20 to get coffee because a lot of money will go into the envelopes.

I’m a mostly cash guy. Some days I’d end up putting 4-5 bills in the envelope. Some days 0-2. I didn’t “make” money obviously. It’s a good exercise in seeing how much you throw away.

The “tin foils” are looking more right about now than most of us had imagined.
