It comes down to commitment, discipline, and professionalism. When working on large international implementations, remote access was the only practical process. Each of us had dedicated systems in our home offices.

A laptop on the kitchen table with dogs and cats barking and howling ain’t gonna work. These people need to be managed.

Amen to that. Just another writer that has never held a regular office job; straight from Academia to Government to think tank. Michael Strain

Remote work works fine for jobs that can be done via computer. Slack is a great communication tool as is Google Meets, WebEx, etc. I've been 100% remote since mid-March. Direct interaction with others is definitely missed, but comms are there in other ways. The amount of work is the same (or greater since time is saved having to transit from one conference room to another in the office).

This experience has changed the expectations of an 'office' and all that is involved with it. The technology to work remotely effectively while still collaborating with coworkers/vendors/customers is now mature enough to support that lifestyle. I'm optimistic about this.

I lived alone but I can imagine folks with children, parents or spouses milling about would be a constant distraction.

A local news/talk radio station has most of their employees working from home. A few of the weather reports have been hillarious. "Clear skies today with highs in the mid... Mommy, mommy, mommy... Shhh. Mid 80s"

“Commercial real estate is in for a world of hurt.”

The Pandemic and Riots are going to change a lot of things. Commercial Real Estate is just one of them.

Who in their right mind would want to live down town in a major city now? New York, LA? A big shift is coming in the places/demographics of where people live.

Won’t need to drive nearly as much so people won’t be buying cars as much or using nearly as much gas.

The Liberal vision of stuffing us all in massive apartments in huge cities is dead.

Teams, WebEx, Slack, Google Meet, Skype, GoToMeeting, ... yes, but guess which one the MSM cites?

Of course. The only meeting software with “Chinese characteristics’”

The only one not banned in Communist China....

That’s what I’m seeing also. An issue that previously was solved with a two minute conversation in the hallway now requires an organized conference call that must fit into everyone’s schedule. Everything takes three times as long.

My group mostly handles things via text group chat. And that leave a written record of what was agreed to.

In a lot of cases, it’s cheaper for the company, just as effective, and much more enjoyable for the worker.

I’ve been remote 3 days a week since March. My dog loves it, I don’t have to commute, I’ve got a way nicer screen and keyboard. I can crank my music and cook meals that take all day attention like stirring.

Harvard and Yale will do their “studies” to show that work from home is less productive once the left realizes that this trend is working against Agenda 21.

And new employees.

The guy who manages the tech service call center where I work is really stressing.

The company allows two tech guys in the building. The others work from home but the phone system can’t really handle remote stuff.

He needs to hire more people but can’t train them in person. Remote works great with a stable team who knows what they’re doing and is trustworthy.

Otherwise not.

Wow...the author, Mr. Strain contributed a chapter to Room to Grow: Conservative Reforms for a Limited Government and a Thriving Middle Class, a reform conservative manifesto that New York Times columnist David Brooks called “the most coherent and compelling policy agenda the American right has produced this century.” He was identified by Karl Rove in 2014 as one of the new “conservative reformers.”

With fans like Brooks and Rove...

"Brooks and Rove" -- weren't they a country/RINO band a while ago?

Who’s this clown trying to drum up clicks on one stupid column with another stupid column?

The tech industry, among others, has hired and succeeded with remote workers left and right—often around the globe. Sure, it can be a challenge if you are newly hired remotely and everyone else already knows each other and is seeing each other in real time, but so it goes.
