Take self-defense classes - Karate, Taekwondo, Krav Maga, etc. Learn to defend yourself. Thats where we are.
BS carry a firearm screw Karate that takes to long!!
If you are young, you are correct. If you are older and physically not up to it, then some sort of a weapon and learn how to use it effectively.
Depending on the law in one's home state, get a CCW and a handgun and carry all the time.
A .22 is enough to make someone lose interest in busting you up, although one will have to accept dealing with the person in court. A .38 revolver with an appropriate load is better...
Also, watch one's language. Certain words are demeaning and rude, frankly, and certain violent, irrational people who have no self-control are easily triggered by them...
To be very clear, the first two you mentioned are not self defense, they are sports. Krav Maga is good, similar to what I taught in the infantry. Even then, you are far better off with a good 1911. Hand to hand is the absolute last resort after everything else has failed.

Learning to defend yourself is a very good idea. Go observe a class first at any potential school. If any potential martial arts training is not using pressure testing on techniques where the other person actively resists, go somewhere else. Most schools do not teach you how to fight and practice techniques against willing opponents who offer no resistance.
After participating in martial arts and combat sports for 50 years and counting, I would say that an average boxer who trains 6 months and spars could beat most black belts in traditional schools. Go to an mma gym or boxing gym. Self defense is more than learning a few techniques. It is learning techniques that work, work against resisting opponents, and having the confidence and will to use them.
