Tuesdays edition of PBS NewsHour featured a discussion about the differences in the experiences of black journalists as contrasted with their colleagues. One of the guests, Los Angeles Times Executive Editor Norman Pearlstine, talked about how one of the active debates we had over the past week was about the use of the word looting to describe the destruction of the property that has taken place at several riots that have occurred in the wake of the death of George Floyd. Pearlstine went on to talk about how the seemingly innocent term is actually profoundly racist.

Dorothy Tucker, the President of the National Association of Black Journalists, argued that the term riot was also racist.

The term “journalist” is racist.
Where’s Looter Guy when ya need him? I’m sure he knows what looting is.
stealing, thieving, robbery, severe shoplifting, confiscating, swiping....etc etc
Blah, blah, blah.....journalists are fair game...blah, blah, blah
Is “pillaging” better? All those “barbaric whites” like the Vikings, Goths, and others were very skilled at it.
I could actually sympathize with Looter Guy from Katrina. A case of Heineken is pretty benign stuff. Not like looting on Rodeo Drive and other glitzy venues.
I wonder what he is up to lately. Could be a great human interest story!
Looting is only ‘racist’ if one thinks that only blacks loot stores. Thus, to me, those making that charge better look at themselves regarding ‘racist’ beliefs.
