On the latest episode of the NOQ Report Podcast, Tammy and JD discussed several issues pertaining to the coronavirus, but nothing was stranger than the video above that shows an episode of “The Dead Zone.” Star Anthony Michael Hall’s character contracts a mysterious and highly contagious disease. It turns out to be a coronavirus that originated in China. The symptoms include high fever and respiratory distress.

In the episode titled “Plague,” it was cured by using the malaria drug Chloroquine. Pretty creepy, eh?

Sorry for the double post and the link in the title.

I wish I could say it was because the cat jumped on me while I was posting, but it was a me problem.

I'll try to have it removed.

(I may or may not actually have a cat and his name may or may not be Cheshire.)

Episode Info
Show: The Dead Zone
Number: Season 2, Episode 14
Airdate: Jul 13, 2003 at 22:00

Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is a viral respiratory disease of zoonotic origin that surfaced in the early 2000s caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV or SARS-CoV-1), the first-identified strain of the SARS coronavirus species severe acute respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus (SARSr-CoV). The syndrome caused the 2002–2004 SARS outbreak.

And hydroxychloroquine was investigated as a treatment for SARS-CoV-1.

I don't know the exact timing of everything, but it looks like this was an extrapolation of the then current SARS outbreak rather than a masterful prediction.

For some reason, the article includes a clip of a different show it discusses.

Here is the clip from the show in the title.

The Dead Zone movie ended with the politician being discredited. The TV Show seemed to have been discontinued. The TV Show was entertaining.

The blog doesn’t have the link to ‘The Plague’ only the ‘9/11’ episode.

The potential of chloroquine as an antiviral has been noted since at least since 2003, possibly earlier. See this Nov 2003 paper:

"Chloroquine exerts direct antiviral effects, inhibiting pH-dependent steps of the replication of several viruses including members of the flaviviruses, retroviruses, and coronaviruses.

Yes I’ve seen it that report as well. I’m sure most of as she heard about it.
This episode was released in 2003 so the show must have been following the medical journals closely as well. Just interesting to hear similar language and response thru out the video. It’s like seeing us now.

I don’t know where I was in 2003.

I don’t remember this show.

I haven’t been a regular viewer of a network series that is fiction since the Michael Moriarty and Paul Sorvino days of Law and Order, although I liked Jerry Orbach too.

No, I went to view the clip and I saw it was a clip for a different show the bloggers discussed so I found the clip referenced and posted it for people.

I hope so. I am going to look for it this weekend when my Prime viewing partner is free. I’m not allowed to mess with that remote.

I believe hydroxychloroquine or something very close to it was taken by people in the 1920’s and 1930’s for flu. I don’t remember where I read that.
