Seriously, some cute stories are nice but I agree with you some of the adoration for their animal is sickening. We have just over 40 acres and everyone that comes with their annoying dog thinks we need one. Some from down the road visit here and there and are a pain when they are pinned and bark all day while owners are working.
I like animals.
That said, I can understand some of the revuslion that other cultures have, especially these days, over the sickening fawning that occurs over pets.
In July both our cats suddenly died. One had lived over 20 years, the other for 15.
A week later we took home a twice rescued cat (woman with cat married man with pit bull that nearly killed the cat before being dragged off; I would have shot the dog).
She has been with us for seven months. We love her as a pet and believe finding her was meant to be (the vet who euthanized the others saved the life of the cat we have now and gave her to us.
Spinster stereotypes aside, in my opinion cat owners are more realistic about their pets not serving as child substitutes. I could be wrong.
