I had $30,000 shoulder surgery on one shoulder that definitely needed it about ten years ago. But the other is now more sore than that one, though that one is not sore at all. I have no health insurance so this sort of thing is all out of pocket for me. I need to look into this. I never heard of shoulder hangs.

I'm sorry to hear about the pricey surgery, cuban leaf. But glad to hear you'll look into this. It can't hurt to check it out.

But the simplest protocol (by far) that I’ve seen to bring the shoulders back into condition is the good ole bar hang.

I've been hanging out in bars most of my adult life, and I can attest to having minimal shoulder pain...

Well, I didn’t state it very well. THAT on was free. I had company insurance with full coverage. And no deductible. That was BEFORE Obamacare. :)

Meanwhile, I fell backwards down a staircase last saturday and there was a lot of pain so I went to the chiropractor yesterday. Turns out I have an abnormally tough skeleton (big bones and joints) and there was no damage. Only pulled muscles. And at age 66 I was surprised I was not broken in half or something.

But we prayed immediately after it happened. And my wife has two miraculous healings after we prayed over the problems (just the two of us).

I have had back problems my entire life, and out of desperation, decided to buy an inversion table.

I was using it twice a day for eight minutes at a time and now only do it when I feel back issues coming on.

It feels great, but it isn’t for everyone. I don’t mind being upside down, but my wife and brother who both tried it couldn’t get over the feeling of being inverted with the blood rushing to their head.

I guess the back pain far outweighed the blood rush to the head for me...

Perhaps your wife and brother could give this a try, since you just hang by your hands (right side up)

Incidentally, I get about an inch and a half taller after an inversion session (out of curiosity, I did a before and after height check)

I guess my problem is mostly disc compression and degenerative changes.

I got Dr. Kirsh’s book two months ago and put the instructions into practice. I’m happy to report that it has worked very well for me. It’s pretty simple, you hang from a bar and do three different dumbbell exercises.

Thanks for the reminder, Mr. K! Yes, the gelatin in there is supposed to be good for that. In fact, I just buy the gelatin in packets at the supermarket, and put some into smoothies, etc.

Even without an inversion table, or those moon boot thingies, you can do shoulder hangs to help decompress the spine too. I’ve got one disc that gets a little hinky, nothing too serious, and if I do a shoulder hang when that happens it usually clears up pretty quick.

Right, Boogieman, that's what I was referring to in the post. I have used the "moon boots" you refer to in the past, but I prefer (as it sounds like you do) to just hang (regular).

I bought one through Wallyworld and sounds like the same table. Originally I pulled my back out in High School lifting weights 50+ years ago. Once is a while something pops and I cannot stand up with severe pain. Hanging upside down I feel something pop like your knuckle pops and then it feels better.
For shoulder pain I take Glucosamine. Before taking that I could not raise my arms.

I got one for my wife and I at Christmas, and it's fantastic. Hard to explain, but I somehow felt straighter when I got off the table, and like some pressure I didn't even know was there had been lifted. It takes a while to get used to, and you have to learn to relax and "think" about your back stretching, but it was a great investment.

And comparatively cheap too. We got ours on Amazon at Christmas, and it came with nice Airsoft ankle holders for $120 or so. You obviously can spend a lot more, but this works really well for us.

Good question, dsc. Dr. Kirsch indicates it has worked for tears, but not for all tears. I recommend you get his book, The Solution and Prevention, on Amazon. You could also contact him by email. He will likely respond, as he has several times to me. I wish you well with it.

If you want an inherently safe way to rehab your shoulders, isometric contraction while stretching/reaching/twisting is protected from serious injury by natural reflexes.

A bonus of these natural reflexes (proprioception) is that it also helps a lot to stretch and improve range of motion. When the muscle movers one side of a joint contract, their partners on the other side naturally (reflexively) relax and extend.

Tightness on one side of a joint, is almost always paired with weakness on the other side - two sides of the same problem. Both need to be developed, to regain full, pain-free range of motion.

The whole area around the shoulder joint - the shoulder blade, the neck, rib cage and thoracic (chest area) spine tug on each other and contort, when one part gets tight and shortened, or strained and weakened.

So pull all the slack out of the whole system (from head to foot, and from hand to hand) by extending the spine tall (as if being lifted from the top of your head, like a Christmas tree ornament), reach with both hands far out to the opposite sides, externally rotate your arms fully (palms up), and lay your shoulder blades flat (no “chicken wings” poking out), and pull those shoulder blades down strongly away from yours ears (don’t let shoulders hunch up).

Then rotate your upper torso 90 degrees without turning your hips or head, so your arms would be stretched front to back, rather than side to side. In that position, stretch/pull/reach/twist to improve reach of each element of the position at the same time time. Then twist the torso the other way, so the opposite hand is out front, and tense/stretch the other side.

By raising your chest/sternum (like Superman), fully extending your thoratic spine (no slumping widow’s hump) your head can reach backward like a Ballroom Dancer, without bending your neck - the whole straight neck is tilted from the raised chest (careful not to bend your lower back while trying to get the head to lean back). Trying to lift your whole ribcage an inch, helps keep the lower back from arcing keep the lower back straight and stretched tall.

This stretch is actually from Ballroom Dancing, but the anatomy of it is common to all - full extension and twisting of the spine, full distraction (reaching out from the joints, like traction) and external rotation (twisting) of the shoulder joint, and fully depressed shoulder blades.

You won’t rip anything loose while working to perfect that posture, and when you do perfect it, your shoulder will essentially be fixed (as well as neck and shoulder blades - even breathing comes easier, and the heart is a little freer to beat).

Check to see what is causing the pain first. If you have a torn tendon no amount of hanging is going to fix it.

While I certainly agree with the first sentence, and the second sentence sounds reasonable, Dr. Kirsch writes that healing can occur, even with tears. Perhaps with tears (crying) too! :)

Good to hear, carriage_hill. If pain recurrs (God forbid!), you may want to see if you have something like an impingement, which is quite common, and what the hanging protocol works so well for.
