The 1992 Dateline piece you refer to was my wake up call regarding the mass media.

For younger readers, NBC at the time admitted to planting explosive devices and then blowing up GM pick up trucks in an attempt to prove they were dangerous.

I have questioned everything the mass media publish or broadcast since then.
