suburbs of Johannesburg

That won’t last. I recently met a couple from SA and mentioned that I wouldn’t mind seeing it. They said, “Then you’d better make it quick because it’s turning to shit.”

Everywhere you look in suburban Johannesburg you see big walls,barbed wire fences and signs that say "Protected By XYZ Security.Armed Response".

One of the suburbs I was referring to is a town called Sandton. We used it a few years ago as our "home base" while visiting the National Parks. It's very,very wealthy...wealthy enough to have a write up in Wikipedia. There was a Rolls Royce dealership within a 2 minutes walk of our hotel.It reminded me very much of the time I got lost in Palos Verdes (suburban LA...very wealthy).

But only about 10 minutes away is a place called Alexandria. It's a shanty town that looks like places I saw in Nairobi and Dar Es Salaam.Absolutely Fourth World.
