Ukranian really is a thing. In Ukraine more people speak it than Russian.
Obama gaffed, “They speak Austrian in Austria”. (Indistinguishable from German). A joke.
I suspect Ukranian is to Russian what Portuguese is to Spanish. Different, but understandable.
