President Donald Trump will award the nation's highest military honor to an active duty Green Beret on Wednesday for his heroic actions while serving in Afghanistan's Shok Valley in 2008, according to the White House.

Army Master Sgt. Matthew Williams, of Boerne, Texas, was critical in ensuring the evacuation of his wounded teammates from a mountain as the unit took fire from insurgents.

“Sergeant Williams’ actions helped save the lives of four critically wounded soldiers and prevented the lead element of the assault force from being overrun by the enemy,” the Oct. 10 White House statement said.

From a CFR article: “Georgia had the highest representation ratio, at 1.5, meaning it contributed 50 percent more than its share of the country’s eighteen to twenty-four year old population. By this measure, Florida, South Carolina, Virginia, and Arizona round out the top five. On the other end of the spectrum—states that contribute fewer recruits than their share of eighteen to twenty-four year olds (those with ratios less than one)—are Washington, DC, North Dakota, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and New York.”

The South is overrepresented in the armed forces in relation to population. The figure I recall is the South provides 40% of all service members. Lots of Scotch-Irish with fighting spirit...says this native Virginian of Scotch-Irish-English descent & 24-year retired veteran!

Part of the Scottish Irish immigrants who gave birth to our generals in the Civil War and until today. Just smart, talented fighters.

It wasn’t always that way. General Patton was from California.

Patton went to VMI. He had extensive Scots-Irish roots in VA. His paternal grandfather commanded the 22nd VA infantry under Early. The Patton family came from Scotland to Culpepper, VA in 1769. Patton may have come from CA, but his roots were firmly planted in VA.

“”If you haven’t read “Born Fighting” by Jim Webb, you might find it interesting...””

In spite of being a democrat, he is/was a pretty good guy - former Secretary of the Navy and a US Senator. He was certainly more palatable than his successor - Tim Kaine - Hillary’s running mate - UGH!

I understand that President Trump considered him for Secretary of Defense...don’t know exactly when.

Thanks for the tip on the book - I haven’t had it on my list but it’s one I had heard about and forgot.. I’ll check on it at the library.
