When Osama was finally brought to justice, the enemedia and administration opened their announcements with a breathless story about the terrorists dying in a hail of bullets during a running battle with US forces that assaulted his fortified compound. Then reported that his body was buried at sea, according to the dictates of his religion, before the sun was even up.

They turned Osama overnight into a war hero for jihadis everywhere. What the enemy heard coming from US media and officials was that their leader died fearlessly fighting the infidels on his own doorstep. And he died so well, that the infidels dared not to dispose of him in any other way but by the laws of their religion.

Who knows how that clown Baghdadi died. But Trump announced it exactly the right way. Now there is doubt in the minds of all jihadis about just how brave and fearless their leaders really are.

Blowing yourself up is pretty fearless. People who are afraid to die tend to surrender. I’m pretty impressed he did blow himself up. It wasn’t as if we were going to (1) have him pulled apart by horses, (2) burn him alive or (3) inflict upon him a death by slow slicing. If he had surrendered, that would have been human but a real blow to the reputation of a man whose stock in trade was sending suicide bombers on one-way missions. As it is, his reputation, like bin Laden’s remains intact. His problem, like bin Laden’s, is that they are indispensable men. Without them at the helm, the factions under them will spend a great deal of their time in a bloody power struggle, until the next consensus leader stands atop a pile of dead challengers.

Having said that, I think Trump is right to toot his horn for the benefit of a domestic audience that thinks this is just one long, drawn-out slugfest with no end in sight. It’s always good to have occasional key moments highlighted to remind people that while there are many down days, there are also up days as well, such as this one.
