I was tempted to turn it off too, but after reading this I thought the battery change may be better to try at first. After all, if it was a weak battery, I thought it would need to be changed anyway at some point.

I turn it off because it is in my home office and I am constantly fiddling with the innards. Comparable to the AC cord interlock on the backs of old tube TVs that my dad would routine defeat with a "cheater" cord (and removing the metal bracket itself).
