When hunting for small game when a kid, I used a double 20. Left barrel was #4 shot for squirrels. Right #6 for everything else. Pheasants were tough to bring down with either barrel, both did it. Still have that gun, an Ithica which had been my grandfather's. He did not hunt but dispatched any rats about the yard quickly with it. I have not fired it in 60 years.

My first real gun I got was a 20 gauge double barrel. It was for my 12th birthday. I still have it. Hunted many years with it. Even kept it in my high school locker on the days I would go hunting after school. My principal always wanted me to bring him back some squirrels.
