I know in Texas you must have a certain amount of acreage to discharge a firearm. I could be wrong, but I think it’s ten acres.

If true then it is widely ignored throughout the state. I now live in rural Texas on about 3 acres of land but have lived in other rural areas of Texas as well where that is not adhered to any in the least. In fact this is the first that I've ever heard that.

Unless they did away with that state law, it exists. I remember squawking about it when they increased the acreage decades ago. I'm not too worried about it now since I own way more than that. One thing to also be concerned about is to make sure your bullets stay on your own property. Unless you have a good backstop and/or a lot of trees, that can be hard to do on even ten acres.

I love the breed. Some of the most loyal, lovable dogs that there are. My current friend is a lab/beagle mix - very much the best of both breeds.

I agree.

In case you missed this post on FR earlier this morning, here is a prime example of those two universes.

Rand Paul was eating in a restaurant in California when two New York liberals confronted him. The woman is livid and uncivil. Of course, she thinks Paul is uncivil because he's a Republican.

The irony is lost on her small, uncivil, angry mind that she is the problem, not Rand Paul's politics.

Within ten minutes of meeting the neighbors here in rural VA, they asked if I had a gun, then recommended that I rip off some shots every now and then, as a hint to local ne’er-do-wells. No Manhattanites in the area.

These furbabies are so spoiled. They have the run of the property and I love that they can be free as can be.

Although one came back after going with *Dad* into the woods, [to set up the trail cam], with 2 porcupine quills in his tongue. So glad it wasn’t worse than that. Dodged that bullet.

When I was young we had the World’s greatest English Springer Spaniel. A great bird hunting dog.

During hunting season he would park himself on the outside front porch and basically live there. When he saw us walking out of the house with our shotgun cases he would be right at the door of the van, ready to drive north into the hills for a morning hunt.

In the afternoon we would try to sneak out of the house through the back door and try to head the 100 yards south to the woods to hunt (just a game we played with him. We would never hunt without him). Our dog would always see us before we could step into the woods.

He lived to hunt.

Could be adding a blue heeler/mix into the fold soon. My father-in-law, God rest his soul, had a penchant for trail dogs - mix of grey/coon hound, wonderful animals with an insane amount of energy. I had to pull a snootful of porcupine quills out - loved that dog but she did not enjoy the experience.

Springers are great....can be a bit nutty. But strong. We did a rescue on one; he must have been 3/4 y/o and had spent his whole life tied to a dog house [4 seasons]. So when we took him home, he only wanted to run. Never broke him from that.

One day, I tied him to a lobster trap we used as a ‘coffee table* on the edge of our lake. Trap had 4 cement blocks in it. That dang dog went into the water and swam across it, pulling the trap w/ the heavy weight across the lake, to get to my son who was fishing. Cra-cray. Beast of a dog. epic stamina.

One of my sons has adopted 2 Blues from a rescue place; one is deaf, the other blind. They are such sweet dogs.

We live in suburban Texas. When we moved into our current home, the neighbors were quick to mention our son was welcome over (similar age as their child), then said they have firearms. That we don’t need to be concerned because they have the weapons out of reach and typically secure, but they do go hunting and shooting. I got the impression play dates had been cancelled when someone saw or mentioned the guns.

I raised my hand to pause the father and then said we were members of the NRA. He cheered and then asked my husband what guns we owned, where we went to the range. My husband shrugged. A rifle, I guess. I added, it wasn’t for hunting, it was a handgun for self-protection when I worked in downtown Dallas.

They were very happy to have pro-gun neighbors. Unfortunately, a lot of our neighbors who relocated from the rest of the country are hysterical about them.

When I moved to rural Arizona, I was able to get a burn barrel. I was talking to my neighbor about it and mentioned I had to drill some holes in it for better combustion.

He asked if I had a gun (oh oh). I said “Yes”. He said “Just shoot some holes in it - much faster.” I did (M1911), and the deputy never showed up.

I had to agree. It was MUCH faster. :-)
