That seems to be the conscious intent all along. Making it a gritty character film like from the Seventies. It even opens with that old style Warner logo. The approach worked quite well (though it does have that ba$t@rd De Niro, filling in for Jerry Lewis from King Of Comedy).
Moore is an idiot, viewing this and everything thru a political lens. The movie wasn’t overly political. The joker ended up aligning with violent anarchists by accident, as a result of his crimes and mental illness. Worthwhile movie, tho I can’t say it lived up to the hype
