Can you imagine for a moment how badly Mitt Romney would lose...to anyone? This guy couldn’t carry two states...against anyone. He’d run as badly as, maybe worse than, Jeb or Kasich.

The author is making a bizarre point here. U.S. Senators make for terrible presidential candidates, and members of Congress from the state of Utah are pretty much the least consequential people in Washington. If Romney had any interest in running for the nomination in 2020 he would have been better off spending four years out of office, running around the country complaining about Trump as a “President-in-waiting.”
