There is nothing new about the attitudes that people express about those that are “other” or “not my kind”. This reaction is actually wired into our brains by evolution and it has taken centuries and much horrific murderous history to get us to begin to control those hateful impulses with law and improved social behaviors. Modern mass media has amplified the voices of ignorance and hate but it can’t affect us if we refuse to give it power.
The secret to defusing the power of the hate mongers and racial inciters is to not react. By training yourself to not react to their words and block their triggering of your own conditioned hateful responses you rob them of their power to make you miserable. After a while your own reactions get more and more muted until they no longer occur.
When they realize that people no longer react to their every utterance they give up like children whose mother no longer reacts to their every tantrum.
You're absolutely right, of course.
My wife and I have full-time custody of our 2 year old granddaughter. As toddlers will do, she can get whiney and/or throw a temper tantrum testing her limits and to see if her unacceptable behavior will get what she wants.
We do our best to just ignore her until she stops and reverts to acceptable behavior. Occasionally, she will not stop so off to bed and a time out is necessary. That usually does the trick and she stops crying and screaming and things get back to normal.
