GRAYLING Few buildings are taller than two stories in downtown Grayling. That soon could change, as a developer works to construct 42 apartments in a five-story building on a vacant corner.
Across the street, developers are evaluating whether its feasible to open an $8.3 million, four-story boutique hotel in a building that has become a local eyesore. Theres another project brimming downtown, one so preliminary city planning officials wont share the details yet.
Weve actually never seen investment like this all at once in Grayling, said Rae Gosling, Graylings Main Street program director, who has worked for years to attract new investment to the citys fading commercial center.
To be able to house visitors right (downtown), Im beyond excited for that, she said. I can not wait to have a hotel down there.
That Grayling, a small fishing town in the northern Lower Peninsula, appears to be experiencing a development boom is not by accident. Local and state economic development leaders say the communitys willingness to change such as, by accepting taller buildings makes Grayling poised to attract future investment, and seize it when it comes.

Haven’t been there since I was in the National Guard.
Grayling for me has never been a fun place to go. It’s drab and lifeless. It’s HQ of some sort for Michigan National Guard, and I’ve always thought that’s pretty much all there was of the town.
Go north to Gaylord, however, and you’re in God’s country. Very nice town, friendly citizens and lots to do there.
The Traverse City Hotels are always booked. It will be nice to have other options.
I was expecting it to be on one of the big lakes. It does look like it has a river running through it.
Looks like a nice area.
Lower Michigan has lots of Moselims, maybe just spreading upwards?
Well said. I like succinct!
FYI "The Grayling" (where the name comes from) is a fish.
The fishing is done at Lake Margrethe, I'm told.
Graying is host to, I believe, the largest (in size) Army and Air National Guard joint installation in the continental U.S. My summer home is just a few air miles south.
Not just “a river” but the world famous Au Sable River one of the top 5 trout waters in the world. Trout Unlimited got its start here.
