Last week, President Donald Trump proposed changing the nation’s legal immigration system to limit green cards given to migrants who rely on welfare benefits or who are not financially independent.

This is not a new idea. In the halcyon days of easy immigration (Ellis Island), admittance was routinely denied to those who could not support themselves and their families. We have an ample supply of native born in that category without importing more.

Plus, the cost of living is a LOT lower in Guatemala, etc. than in California.
