Backstory, 31k grocery workers went on strike, citing increasing Insurance costs as one of the major reasons. Just three days they freak out that they can’t pay rent. Maybe they could ask their union bosses who make 6 figures off their union dies to help a fellow “union sister” out, right?

For me, the supermarket was a nice teenage job for me while I was in high school. I shagged some carriages, bagged some groceries and even stocked some shelves.

It never crossed my mind that this was a "career" job. Just a job for some kid to get a foot in the door in the working world and some pocket money while going to school. Anybody making a career in a supermarket was either going into management or learning a trade (like butcher).

I would have cashiered as well but back then, only girls were expected to do it. In fact, that was all girls ever did in a supermarket back then and the reason given was that they were "more honest and trustworthy" than the boys and thus could be trusted with handling money.

These were the 1970s - back when you could say things like that and not get hit with lawsuits and bad publicity.

I remember one boy (very effeminate) wanted to cashier and management was in a pickle with regard to what he should wear as they were very uptight with their dress codes at the time. At the time, the girls at the registers all wore pink jackets and the boys (doing everything else) wore blue jackets. Management wore deep red jackets. It must have been considered unthinkable to have a "blue jacket" running a register so the one boy was issued a managers red jacket to cashier with. Though I think the kid would have happily worn pink if he was allowed.

All unions are not equal. Anyone can do the cash register, stock shelves, and bag groceries. Not much training or skill required.
Not saying anything bad about the people who do it, and do it well. It takes a lot longer to get trained up in a technical field, and you make yourselves and your brothers and sisters more valuable by being professional.

Union bosses need to ask their members to contribute to a new program, called: strike insurance. That way, union members can strike forever and collect insurance payments while sitting at home on strike.

Unions promise to support members during strikes.

The members of the leadership that is.

Oh,. My Lord,, the stories I could tell you about the grocery industry, from the baggers (Courtesy Clerk) to midnight stocking, management and beyond. Every time we negotiated more money in a union contract, the price of groceries increased within 2 months.

A have hundreds of fun stories. One time I was stocking very early in the morning, and this Asian lady was piling all the canned dog food into her cart. Something just didn’t look right about it, so I approached her and asked if I could help. She did not know hardly any English, and declined my assistance. Something told me to keep trying to help. So... What do you see on a can of peas or corn? You see exactly what is in the can, peas or corn. What is on the label of a can of dogfood?? The head of a dog. The Asian lady thought she was buying canned dog. When I tried to relate to her what was actually inside those cans, she acted disgusted and left the store. I have many more stories to tell later.
