.243 Winchester - Best one to go with
Am Shooting Journal ^ | 4/8/2019 | C Cocoles

Posted on 04/08/2019 4:45:07 AM PDT by w1n1

Something that hunters and semi-seasoned hunters talk about is the best deer rifle/caliber. For the non-hunters most will only think of the 30-06 or 308. All the old favorites are normally there, like the classic Marlin, Remington and Ruger rifles.
They go back and forth on what’s better between a .270 Winchester, a 308 Winchester and a 30-06 Springfield. But, some experienced hunters will tell you go with the .243 caliber rifle. This hunting rifle may be smaller than most, but it packs a pretty good punch on whitetail.

The .243 Winchester cartridge was initially designed as a target/varmint round, it may be used for animals such as coyotes, black tail deer, whitetail deer, mule deer, pronghorns, and wild hogs. This .243 is light, small and perfect for beginning deer hunters. However, this rifle caliber doesn’t just stop there. Read the rest of 243 Win caliber.

Years ago I had the chance to buy a Finnish Valmet in .243

Seemed a bit extravagant and odd at the time.

Should have bought it :)

Doesn’t this blog have editors? Why is the writing so terrible?

Sorry to complain, but honestly, the writing is so poor on many of the Am Shooting Journal articles that they’re unreadable.

I am a .308 kinda guy, that and .223, just because the stuff is ubiquitous.

Gee I hope I did not piss off the grammar police.

My late sister used to use a .243 for deer hunting. She would usually call it a .432 because it sounded bigger. She was an expert shot with it though.

Adequate. It’s a tad on the light side for anything larger than an Eastern Whitetail IMHO.
Rule out the really bigger stuff-and it’s fine. Its lack of recoil is a big plus.

I should have bought that Valmet just for weird collectable factor.

I had a Valmet over and under. A .243 over a 12 gauge. There was a flip up sight on the rib. Even with iron sights it was extraordinariy accurate. No easy way to mount a scope.

Another one of those I should have kept. Metal work was first class but the walnut stock was just good. Several small mistakes in the checkering.

It would shoot like a house on fire tho.

My .243 Win has shot a lot of Whitetails. Great rifle!

They don't seem to care. I've actually written to them and their response was 'yeah, tell me about it.'
