The more I read about this testimony the closer to being convinced I become that Steele did not visit the iReport website himself, or have any idea what sort of site it really was. Thus he had not read the disclaimers, and did not realize that it was pathetic to cite iReport as a reliable source for his calumnies.
In his deposition, Steele frames every answer about this with “We”; he never says “I did this or that research” or “I wrote this”. Perhaps Steele is channeling Queen Victoria, or did this to dilute responsibility, but I think he wanted to evade the simple truth: others came up with the dirt and wrote the dossier. Glenn Simpson’s wife has said the dossier was the result of Glenn’s work. Others point to Nellie Ohr.
It drives me nuts that lawyers have Steele under oath, and can’t bother to ask him: Did you personally research the “dossier” — all of it? Did you personally write the “dossier” — all of it? If not, who else researched or wrote portions of it? What are their names? What parts did each of them research and/or write? Those questions are material to their case, and potentially would have exposed more defendants to go after.
