Trump Proposes To Have Allies Pay For U.S. Military Presence Plus 50%, Report Says

Last week, Bloomberg reported that the Trump administration is drawing up demands for Germany and Japan — and eventually other countries — to pay for the costs of hosting U.S. troops in their countries, plus an additional 50% or more.

Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY), who sits on the Armed Services Committee and is the head of the House Republican Conference, criticized the Trump administration's move, calling it “absolutely devastating.”

“We benefit tremendously” by stationing soldiers in South Korea, Japan, Germany and other countries, Cheney said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday. “The notion that we are now going to somehow charge them ‘cost plus 50’ is really — it’s wrongheaded, and it would be devastating to the security of the nation and our allies.”

I actually don’t like this idea.

The allies should pay their share of the military budget but the US Army is simply a mercenary organization.

i can see some situations where we would wish to pay, and other situations where the host country definitely should pay

this should be implemented wisely, on a case-by-case basis...reflecting the host country’s ability to pay as well as the benefits USA may derive

its a good and long-overdue idea, .... with
balance.
balance.

Start high and compromise down to just 100% (frankly the countries should just be doing the entire thing themselves anyway)

WRONG. THEY "benefit tremendously”. It is time to shift our forward deployed and put a great portion on the border since that is where the war is right now.

“I actually don’t like this idea.

So you’d rather see our national debt spiral deeper into the $hitter? The cold hard fact of the matter is that WWII is long over, ditto the Cold War. Our so called “allies” have snookered us into protecting them without them having to lift a finger or open their wallets for 70 or more years! It has allowed $hit countries like Germany, after having caused WWII, to shirk any responsibility for their own protection and using the money ( actually your money and my money) to build a socialist country with us footing the bill. And even now, Shickelgrubberville refuses to pay even the share or NATO it is obligated to pay by virtue of the treaty it signed! Personally, I say pi$$ on the lot of them. They’ve sealed their fate with the Muzzie hoards they’ve let into their countries, so leave them to swim without our rope to pull them out. Let them deal directly with Puttie Pute. See if he will “protect them” from him!

That is precisely what is going on. It is the Trump negotiating style.

Actually, with the possible exception of South Korea, why would we not just pull our forces out of these countries? There’s no USSR anymore, so Germany isn’t under any real threat and should be able to defend itself. Similarly with Japan, which is a prosperous industrialized nation that is not under any imminent military threat. There’s always the threat of an invasion of South Korea by North Korea, so I can understand that deployment, but it’s high time to let Japan and Germany defend themselves.

Just his opening offer. I’ll bet he’d quickly settle for 110% instead of 150%. With hard negotiating, they could probably get it down to 100%.

Of course, if Thersa May is negotiating for the EU, she would probably counter with an offer to pay 200%, given how she’s shown how poor her negotiating skills are.

Bingo! The US as the “policeman” of the world? Straight out of the annals of Foreign Policy Magazine. Why should we pay for their safety with American blood? Have we not learned anything after two world wars, Viet Nam, Korea, Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia.....They want security and a guard, let them pay for it—or do it themselves.

“They want security and a guard, let them pay for it—or do it themselves.”

I like the last part of your sentence best. Let them do it themselves. When I think about my cousin cold in the ground from his “service” in Vietnam, I want to puke! I watched his parents wither for the rest of their lives, and for what? Not a f*cking thing! In truth, we have not fought a war worth fighting since WWII. And look at all the young men and women who died needlessly and didn't get to live out their lives because some elitist pr!cks in Washington thought each and every one of these wars we've been in since 1945 were worthwhile in some way. Then there's the "issue" of our national debt. Which was probably manageable at $5 trillion, but which is more than quadruple that number thanks to two men, Boosh II and the Magic Negro! If it weren't for Israel, I'd be all in for making that part of the world into a glass table top through the use of nuclear weapons. The blood and treasure we've put on the sands of the ME is the biggest disgrace this country has ever endured. And now it's hard just to walk away because we have accepted "responsibility" for that trash heap.

“Of course, if Theresa May is negotiating for the EU”

With the butt ugly mug she has, you’d think the EU would pay her to never darken their door again!

I’d wager he is just trying to jolt them into helping pay for the benefits they get from our presence.
