Professor: Hate Hoax Crimes are More Common than People Think
Canada Free Press ^ | February 25, 2019 | John Sexton

Wilfred Reilly is an associate professor at Kentucky State University where he teaches political science. Reilly has a piece at USA Today which is based on a forthcoming book he is writing on hoax hate crimes. His conclusion is that these crimes happen far more often than people think:

Doing research for a book, Hate Crime Hoax, I was able to easily put together a data set of 409 confirmed hate hoaxes. An overlapping but substantially different list of 348 hoaxes exists at fakehatecrimes.org, and researcher Laird Wilcox put together another list of at least 300 in his still-contemporary book Crying Wolf. To put these numbers in context, a little over 7,000 hate crimes were reported by the FBI in 2017 and perhaps 8-10% of these are widely reported enough to catch the eye of a national researcher…

In college campus hate hoax cases (Kean College, U-Chicago), the individuals responsible almost invariably say that they staged incidents to call attention to real incidents of racist violence on campus. Certainly, the media giants that leap to publicize hate crime stories later revealed to be fakes, and the organizations that line up to defend their “victims” — the Southern Poverty Law Center, Black Lives Matter, CAIR — think that they are providing a public service by fighting bigotry.

However, hate crime hoaxers are “calling attention to a problem” that is a very small part of total crimes. It’s worth noting that the number of hate crimes is not a figure that represents uniform national reporting. According to the FBI: “Agencies that participated in the Hate Crime Statistics Program in 2017 represented more than 300 million inhabitants, or 94.1 percent of the nation’s population, and their jurisdictions covered 49 states and the District of Columbia.” So it’s most of the country but not quite all of it. So it’s at least arguable that these crimes are still underreported.

Still, the total number of violent crimes in the U.S. in 2017 was 1,247,321 (that doesn’t include 7,694,086 property crimes). So in the scheme of things 7,100 hate crimes is not a huge number, which is obviously a good thing

The most interesting part of this piece is the suggestion that only about 10% of reported hate crimes generate much news. I wonder if the high-profile cases, i.e. ones that become national stories, are somewhat more likely to be hoaxes than some of the others that don’t make the news. You can kind of see how that would make sense. A hoax crime, like the Smollett case now appears to be, is tailor-made to make a splash with the media.... Smollett’s story appeared theatrical, almost cinematic,... The noose, the bleach, the ranting about “MAGA country” was a perfect story for attracting anti-Trump eyeballs. That, combined with Smollett’s celebrity, made it much more likely it would become national news.

Here's one of the most egregious of the sicko Left hoax agenda...

The reportedly 'Trump-inspired' racist blaze at the black church in Mississippi was actually lit by a BLACK churchgoer (November 2016). Leftist MSM ran headlines like “A Black Church Burned in the Name of Trump” after a black church in Greenville, MS was spray painted with the words “Vote Trump” and then lit ablaze.

Wa-Po (the Compost) printed, “Greenville Mayor Errick Simmons called the fire a ‘hateful and cowardly act,’ sparked by the incendiary rhetoric of GOP nominee Donald Trump during his presidential campaign.”

So disgusting that the church was set on fire by one of the church’s very own black congregants.

It’s easy to imagine revenge and greed being two common motives for hate crime hoaxes...charge a cop with “racial profiling” or “excessive force” and get a cool, and easy,$250K.

Best list I know of, over 600 items. And they haven’t updated in a bit, there are 3-4 new ones, including Jussie Smollett.

Well, you know, someone has to do the crimes that conservative American’s won’t do. How else can you justify the overreaching, overspending corrupt government?

It’s about jobs, saving high consumption, low production jobs for people who have little ability and very low ethics.

Some of the more outrageous hoax hate crimes of November 2016, when Trump was elected president.

1. A Muslim woman at the U. of Michigan claimed a drunken man threatened to light her on fire if she didn’t remove her hijab. She made it up, 100%.

2. Bisexual student Taylor Volk, an openly bisexual man at N. Park University, claimed to be the target of hateful notes and emails following Trump’s election. She told NBC News that “I just want them to stop.” She had fabricated all the notes to herself.

3. Gas station racism - Phili. woman Ashley Boyer claimed she was harassed by white, Trumper males who pulled a knife on her. She claimed that the white men “proceeded to talk about the election and how they’re glad they won’t have to deal with n—–s much longer.” She even claimed the men had been caught and were facing criminal charges. All false, police knew nothing about it.

4. White men in Trump hats supposedly rob 18 yo Muslim woman of her hijab and wallet in Louisiana while yelling racial slurs. She confessed to the police that she made the whole thing up after they questioned her tale.

5. Church organist vandalizes his own church but was arrested May 2017. He had spray-painting a swastika, and ‘fag’, and “Heil Trump” on the church front wall.

6. Another 18YO Muslim NYC woman claimed she was a attacked by Trump supporters at the subway station while onlookers all stared. This nutbag Yasmin Seweid eventually confessed that she lied completely and there was no attack.

Hopefully his book does a better job of scope and summation. What time span were the 409 that he found? What percentage of overlap were the 348? If they were in one year, then they can compare them to the 7,000 in 2017, otherwise the numbers are useless.

I suspect they are missing a large number.

I remember this one I reported on in March of 2016.

No mention of it.

The fake shooting threats are fake hate crimes. The hate they engender is against gun owners and Second Amendment supporters.

This happens all the time in the Raleigh area at the many local colleges. Somebody throws a noose in a tree, they make a big deal, and then when it’s exposed they claim it’s an art project.

The most interesting part of this piece is the suggestion that only about 10% of reported hate crimes generate much news.

Say in a given town ten hate or sex crimes occur over a period of time. Only one is reported. At the same time, one person decides to fake a crime.

Liberals say only ten percent of these crimes are reported, which is correct.

Conservatives say that fifty percent of the reported crimes are hoaxes, which is also correct.

Liberals then try to claim that hoaxes are a tiny percentage of the real crimes occurring, which is a completely irrelevant attempt to change the subject.

Law enforcement can only spend time on reported crimes, and if they are wasting half their time on politically-motivated hoaxes then the politicians who are inspiring them are at fault - and need to pay a price for their irresponsibility.

Hate crime hoaxes are precisely as common as we believe here on FR. If it’s so unusual that it makes the news, it is almost always #FakeNews.

I hafta wonder if any "hate crimes" against whites are counted at all.
'Specially since they're so reluctant to call any crimes against whites a "hate crime". Which seems I've read about plenty over the years, even with the perpetrator announcing it.

hoaxes grow where not taxed or punished.
It would be easy to assume that “taxed” is off the table, but I’m not so sure. Not a “tax,” exactly, but libel suits for punitive damages are required.

Nick Sandmann’s lawyer is showing how it’s done. I hope.

I’m not a Catholic, and the church seems to have some substantive problems in the chain of command at present, but this business of tarring the whole organization for the fact that a 16-yo boy smiled self-consciously while being focused on by a publicity-hound "Indian Vietnan vet” and more than one camera has got to stop.
