We’ve been there and there’s nothing of value to warrant the cost of the trip. Work on Mars, ‘cause we haven’t been there. Not likely anything there to warrant the cost of that trip either, but humans are explorers.

Weve been there and theres nothing of value to warrant the cost of the trip. Yes there is: the high ground. The moon has a much shallower gravity well. This should not be abandoned. See R.A. Heinlein's The Moon is a Harsh Mistress for a fuller discussion of the advantages.
