I am pretty sure the USPS has a “postal cover” program in which they photocapture the front of every envelope (think of that: EVERY envelope) that goes through the US Mail. That is why they can find the anthrax hoaxers, etc.
The surveillance system in this country is so thorough that it takes some very serious thinking to evade it.

You can sign up to have pictures of your mail emailed to you. Unfortunately it is just letters and not packages or magazines yet.
