Wow, what a character your dad was. He deserved promotion to at least 1 star general.
The only other hero I can think of that captured (&/or killed) large numbers of the enemy was a Texan named Audie Murphy, the most decorated soldier of WWII and all he got was a field promotion to 2nd Lt.
Enlisted and non-coms do the fighting (and dying) while offices take all the credit. Not much different in the private sector, lol.
